Ordered a new one a few weeks ago and finally installed it. The original was falling down on the engine and came off in many pieces. I have read many the story of how it's not needed but my paint is 100% original and in excellent shape so it gets a new insulator.

The part was not a bad price but the $30.00 shipping was a kicker
David,

Shipping costs seem to be increasing about every six months or so.....especially large bulky items!

The hood insulator on the '99 in my signature is starting to show some signs of age this year too. It is secured with small rectangular clips and I noticed the replacement in the picture is secured with round clips? How was your original secured and which do you recommend?

Mine was the same as yours with the rectangular, in fact I have a whole box I ordered off amazon. I installed the round that came with it as they seem to cover a wider area and hopefully will not break through like the rectangular. I ordered the foil back, Don't know if that will help longevity or not. Removed all the clips with a trim tool breaking off the lock tab which will be in the hood channel forever. The under hood light harness has christmas tree retainers so those are reusable. The light does not need to be removed as there is a cut out for that. Probably took about 1 hour for removal and install. There was one hole missing for the wire clip nearest the light that I had to make.

I think the foil back is a good choice.

Thanks for the installation details.

I am the second owner. My Dad bought it new. It had to have a dent repaired in the hood from a foul ball. The body shop may have taken it out to fix the dent and then not put it back..................

The insulator was there when new. I chucked mine quite a few years ago. No difference in the in cab noise but a new area to clean when washing the truck. If you saw how much bug pieces make it to the inside of the hood you might reconsider replacing it. Notice the led bar that actually light up the engine compartment. A much better place to spend money IMO.

No bug pieces under my old one but it only has 94k on it :D. In Az. I have measured up to 180 degrees on the sheet metal with a cold engine, I do not need the added heat from the engine running. I still see 2nd gens running around here with paint peeling and I just do not need that problem.

No, that is the bugs from normal driving here in the winter season without the insulator. That bug splatter was caked on your old insulator, along with road grime. You just can't see it because it absorbs into the mat. My hood paint is faded and in bad shape too, but I doubt it is from engine heat. Poor washing techniques from when it was new and nearly 1.4 million miles of abrasive dust particles in the air have done my paint in. I'm putting off replacing my windshield, again, from the tiny specks of chipped glass making driving toward the sun a kaleidoscope.

GAmes, I like the light bar. Have the same in my AMAZON saved area thinking of using to light my back deck area on my boat. May just get two!

Nice looking insulation replacement...

The hood insulation was factory from '94 - '2001. The only 2002's you see with them were the ones that happen to get the hood insulation that was still on the factory assembly line before they ran out.

Another option albeit more expensive but adding sound reduction is Advanced Thermal Products. They make "Dodge Quiet Kits" and can not only provide good thermal insulation but significant sound reduction and are especially helpful in cold climates.

They make Dodge Quiet Kits for 94 -02 Dodge Rams as well as the newer models. Give them a call or email and they can send you their list of products for our trucks.

I was wondering if that was the case, like no rear fender liners.

my '02 RegCab was built 9/01 and did not have the hood liner; Dad's '01 QuadCab built 5/01 that he bought 8/01 did not have it either, but he was able to order a kit through the dealer when he picked up the truck...it had the rectangular clips and fell apart after 15 years, covered with dust and bug carcasses...
