My '97 w/105k & an automatic trans. is having a problem shifting from 2nd to 3rd. It seems like it doesn't want to go into 3rd, and drops back to 2nd. It does this for a little while when the temps are around freezing, then runs fine when the truck is warmed up. If the temps are above 40, it runs fine. I did a search & couldn't find anyone having these symptons w/their truck.

While driving first thing in the AM when it is cold & the transmission's acting up, if I let off the throttle & get back on it, it seems to shift OK. Once it's warmed up, it runs fine. Is this a throttle position sensor issue?? Or something else? The fluid was last changed about 12 mos. ago(15K mi. )Thanks in advance, John

how long has it been doing this?

I hate to say this but my truck did something similar for a week before i was left with only 2 gears :{

by the way the truck drove perfect prior to the mods. :-laf Now I just have to explain to my wife why the truck needs dtt parts!

I noticed the truck started doing this when the temps dropped below 40 deg/f. All the mods you see in my signature were done when the truck had around 25K on it, nothing lately. No problems with the transmission until now.

Mine has been doing the same thing off and on for the past three years. I tried electrical contact cleaner sprayed in and on the TPS, seemed to work well for awhile (approx 3 months) then I would have to repeat the process. I had the same problem on my 24 Valve and as a result I installed the "Noise Filter" from DTT. It cost 47 US plus shipping. No more problem. I just got off the phone and ordered one for my 12 Valve... then that problem will be gone as well. It is easy to install yourself. DTT website: www.dieseltrans.com

Don :)

Don, I'm not saying this will fix or not fix the problen, but I've had no problems with the transmission shifting for 9 yrs+ until now. I don't see why I now need some sort of filter. Did your truck do this? Did this fix it?? I don't want to shell out almost $50 for nothing. Thanks for replying, you too Dave.

My truck has always done that, even after a fresh rebuild. My understanding of the symptom is that there is a temperature sender in the transmission ling by the left side of the transmission. It prevents damage to the transmission when the fluid is cold. Just let the transmission run in neutral for 5 minutes or so when its cold before you go. You will be fine.

Don, what is the "noise filter"? I went to the link you gave me & there is no mention of one on their web site, except on their price list, and that gives no description of what it does. Thanks, John

my stock did that to me before I had a local transmission place beef it up the first time I had the transmission built.

The stock drove fine but would hang in between 2 and 3 till I would lift my foot then it would kick in 3 and then drive like nothing was wrong, and as long as I drove normal on the pedal would shift though gears pretty good, but if I gave it a little more throttle it would again hang in between 2 and 3 it was a bad solinoid and seals wear broken the transmission shop told me.

I don't know that the filter will help you with the 2-3 shift as it is strictly a hydraulic shift. try adjusting the TV cable by sliding the cable housing towards the front of the truck by two clicks and see if that helps(lowering the TV pressure).
