A couple of weeks ago we got back from a camping trip and after I dropped off the trailer at the storage lot I noticed a clunking sound from underneath the truck when making slow turns. I've only got 12,500 miles on the truck and my trailer is about 6,000 lbs. The noise may have been happening earlier but with the trailer there's always noise from the hitch.

Yesterday I took the truck into the dealer to have them take a look and this is what they wrote on the work order.

Caused by VERIFIED NOISE FROM FRONT COIL SPRINGS. RECOMMEND FRONT COIL SPRINGS AND SHOCKS - SPECIAL ORDERED PART.

They told me the parts will take 2 weeks to come in and that I could drive the truck until then. I looked underneath the truck and can't see anything obviously wrong with the springs or shocks. I just can't figure out what I could have done to warrant replacing the springs and shocks. Any ideas on what might be going on? I've read various threads on front end problems but none seem to apply.

I don't think I've heard of any front end problems with 2WD trucks.

Mine has over 146,000 miles. It still has the original shocks and has never been aligned.

I have absolutely no abnormal tire wear and it drives as well as the day it was new.

Beware of that dealer's service department. Like Bob above, I've owned two previous 2wd Rams with lots of miles and never replaced any front end parts beyond shocks.

I've never heard of worn out front springs. Coil springs can sag over a long lifetime of heavy loads but not on your truck with such low mileage.

Take your truck to a competent and honest front end shop and ask for their opinion.
