What is the largest size tires anyone has on a 2wd? Any pics? I was thinking about 285/70/17's with a front 1 1/2 inch level kit.

I have 285's on my 05 2500 2wd. I don't have pics yet because I haven't stopped long enough to clean it! No rub anywhere on Centerline wheels.

I think I'm about to buy some H2's and 285/70's to go on my 2WD and was wondering if anyone who has already done this has seen any reduction in fuel economy? I always put slightly bigger tires on my previous trucks and the MPG was actually slightly better with the bigger tires, but this is my first 3rd Gen. By the way, I have 3. 73's in the '04 2WD.

Surely more than a couple guys have stepped up to 285/70/17 tires on their 2WD and have some observations. I've already searched all over this site (and others) and can't really find any information.

May not help you, but I'm running 285/70-17 Toyo A/T's on my 2nd Gen on 3rd Gen wheels. I do have some rubbing at full lock on the fender liner but nothing to worry about.

We put my old H2 wheels and 315's on my brother's truck (05 2wd) and they rubbed a little. He hit a chunk of scrap metal in the road which took out one of them so went back to his stock wheels and rubber.

On truck in my sig, I've been running this setup fro almost 90k miles. No problems and no rubbing. Had the H2's, 285 BFG's, and Daystar spacers on all since 8k. If I did see any change in mileage, it was negligible. I will say be ready to replace control arms/ball joints (all one assembly) due to the spacers. Not sure why they don't play well together, but I'm on my second set now and will run these until they get so bad I have to do them again.

Thanks for the replies. Wolfman, do you have any pics of your truck? I'd love to see what yours looks like.

I'm really trying to keep from running the spacers up front. I'd probably go back to 265's before I run spacers to fit the 285's with no rubbing. I went ahead and bought the chrome H2's and the 285 BFG's are on their way. I'd like to have it all installed by this weekend, but it may be next week sometime depending on how soon the tires get here.

I finally did it! Oo.

The wheels are chrome H2's with 285/70/17 BFG A/T's (Load Range D). I machined the wheels myself using the holesaw and router method (turned out excellent and balanced perfect). The tires are retreads from TreadWright. For the naysayers, this is my second set of tires from TreadWright and I love them. I've already put 1000 miles on this set and they're doing great so far. Not bad for around $100/tire, huh? :D I also added a set of Husky mud flaps at the same time I did the wheels and tires. If it weren't for the mud flaps, there would be ZERO rubbing. However, the right front tire does rub just slightly at the top of the mud flap at full lock (to the right). The suspension on the truck is totally stock. So, here's a couple pics, along with a pic of my wife's new Jetta TDI Wagon for good measure... :D

Update:

I put the Dodge centercaps on the H2 wheels tonight. Use a 3" cut-off wheel to take 7/8" off the base of the centercaps, and then used the bench grinder on all the mounting tabs so they would fit snug. Looks and works great!

I'm very surprised about the lack of comments from my last post. I figured between using a holesaw for machining the wheels and then the retread tires I'd be getting some flack on both counts. :-laf
