We want to move out of the state of Ca. to some place that has cleaner air(Oregon). Instead of going out and buying another p/u and have another payment, what are your ideas of making my truck a 4X4?? I finally found a truck that I really like and getting it changed and fixed up like I want it so I don't want to start over again. .

What are you thoughts. .

Thanks

Rick

I think you should be alright with a 2 wheel drive truck. Gets some chains, sand bags (find a way to attach to bed of truck... just in case someone was to hit you. You don't want the bags to fly around) and some good snow tires. Plus it was save you allot of $$$$.

you also might want to get the average snow fall for the area. Here in Denver you can get by without 4 wheel drive... however I go to the mtn's alot.

just my . 02 worth

With moving to a place that you can hunt and fish. . it would be nice to have the 4x4 and not have to worry about getting stuck. You may not need it all the time but its that one time that would have made it worth all the work. When I decide I want to go somewhere. . I want to go. .

I would advise you to get the cost of all the components to make yours 4wd. I think you will find it cheaper to get another truck and transfer all of your goodies to it. The transfer case and front axle alone will be extremely expensive, then you need a shorter rear driveline and a complete front driveline. Add springs, steering linkages, shocktowers, shocks, trackbar, and hardware. I am sure I missed a few things you will need, but you get the idea. You have quite a bill already before labor or your own time. I am not trying to talk you out of it, just point out some of the costs you will incur. I have done several 2wd to 4wd conversions, and it can be done cheaply, but then again you don't have a 70's-80's half ton chevy. I think the boneyard is the only source of components that will even approach making sense in dollars and cents. Hope this helps.

C'mon, four wheel drive is only for those of use who need to get another 100 yards before getting stuck:D

bighammer

You have made it all clear to me now. I always wondered the theory behind 4X4:rolleyes:

I think that instead of going the 4X4. . I might get me a heavy duty winch if I need to get the extra 100 yards or so... . lol
