Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 2wd transmission vs. 4wd transmission

what is the difference in a 2wd nv5600 and a 4wd nv5600. I was told that if I ever convert my truck to 4x4, that I'll have to replace the transmission. Why is that? Is there any way to use my old transmission?

You could use a divorced t-case.

I was told that in order to put a overdrive unit on my 2WD 5600, I would have

to swap on a 4WD "tail housing" for lack of a better word... If this is true ???

couldn't you just do this and then hook up the transfer case? Sorry to answer
