I have a 1991 with 3. 08 gearing. There has been mention before about differences in this housing and others. I would like to install a locking differential (probably a selectable locker) and was wondering about availability.

Thanks

Dan

ARB does not make an air locker for our trucks.

There used to be Detroit locker for our rear axles. These replaced the spider gears. One note of warning. I have seen this type used on a S10 before. The work all right. But they can be harsh at times on engagment and disengagment. Now I say harsh. This is on a S10. Think of what it would feel like on 6k of truck and 400" pound of torque.

You can still get the factory unit from Dodge. The price is a killer. Your looking at $530 for the carrier assy. If you do heavy towing. I would not reccomend this unit. Dodge had a lot of problems with it and heavy towing. The salesmen litature had a line in it. "This unit not recommended behind the Cummin engine". Dodge would sell you one installed. But after the second or third time it was worked on. They would drop the warrenty on it.

The problem we have is the 3:08's. It limits us on what is out there. This axle is its own design. Hardly anything else will fit it. If the unit you are looking at is a complete carrier type. The only one of those type out there is a stock unit. From what I can find.

Actually the heavy weight of the truck along the automatic transmission and its relatively long length will help dampen the harshness.

I do not know if the weight and length would dampen the harshness at all. This is what I would classify as hard engagement. The heavier truck and more torque I think would amplify the engagement rather than dampen it.

The S10 I know of one being installed in is a $X$. So the size of the rear axle to weight of the smaller truck. Would put it about the same scale as our heaver rears and weight. That S10 should go around 4k. Half of ours with half the rear end.

On thing to think about on slick turns with a locker. If it unlocks in the middle of a turn. It can unload the chassis enough to slide the rear end. Been there done that. LOL
