3.42 Rear end for a 03 2500?

Dodge shows and option of a 3. 42 rear end with the 6 speed manual transmission for the 2008 truck. Can this be retrofitted to a 2003? While I tow some with my truck and have pulled a 9,000 # Airstream with it, I spend a lot of time on the road with no load. I am reasonably confident that the truck would stay well within its torque range for any load I would pull with the 3. 42 and would get better gas mileage when running on the interstate. Has anyone looked into this?

I believe you can retrofit them into your axle(s). There is a long thread about that very thing somewhere on the site.
