I have a 2000 2500 auto with 3:54 gears. My truck and trailer weigh 18,000 lbs total. Supposedly my truck is only rated for 16,000 lbs. I love the 3:54 gears when I am empty and I get 20 - 25 mpg on the freeway. But when I am pulling my trailer I am wondering if I would rather have the 4:10 gears.

Anyone compared both?

Is it too costly the change my 3:54s to 4:10s?

Or does it really matter since the transmission is the weak link anyway.

Had em all..........

The 4:10's are way to low for me. My truck weighs 10K and I still didn't like it. Found someone to swap for the 3:54's and loved it on the freeway but hated it otherwise.

The good news is the 3:73's I have now are perfect. Good combo for both town and freeway driving.

As far as cost if you go from 3:54's to 4:10's you will also have to change the carrier. Another $500 I believe. If you go to a 3:73 you wont.

Been there done that,

I cant see it being worth the labor, and money to go from 3. 55 to 3. 73,it is such a small change, and can be accomplished by dropping one tire size. I have 4. 10's with 285 tires. I feel this is ideal for the auto that pulls on occasion. I woul not want 3. 55's and 285 tires,it is hard on the auto, and the motor is always below 2000 rpm's,unless your going 83 mph.
