I just bought the 98 and according to my calculations it must have a 3. 73 gear. It has the standard tires and pulls slightly under 2000rpm at 70mph. This compares to just over 1800 for my 95 and about 2125 for my company Y2K with 4. 10's. I did not think the 3. 73 gear was OE for Dodge, but there is no real evidence the rear end has been tampered with.

Also, has anyone tried the Cummins upgrade? The truck has 45k and I would like to keep the warranty for awhile and still keep up with my 95.

JC,

as far as I'm aware the only two rears available for the diesel were the 3. 54 and the 4. 10. Did you look for the tag on the rear pumpkin to see what it says? If it's not there, I think you can look on the "code" plate on your right side radiator suport and look it up that way with a shop manual. Also, under my hood is a sticker with what came on truck and it says the axle ratio.

Cummins Upgrade

JC,

The Cummins upgrade is mucho bucks and is only equvilent to a #12 TST plate. If you want to keep your warranty wait until 2003 or replace the plate with a #11 and reuse the breakoff screws.

Are you calculating for the overdrive? Seems to me that a 4. 10 would be around 3. 73 in OD. (guesstimated)

Best thing to do is, jack the rear up, and mark the driveshaft.

Have someone watch the mark as you rotate the tires one revolution. The amount of times the driveshaft rotates is your ratio.

BTW 5 speeds and autos have different OD ratio's too.

Gear ratio

The best way to find out what gears you have is to jack up the rear end and spin the driveline. Mark the tire and the driveline in a specific spot that's easy to remember. If you have a 3. 73 the drive line will turn 3. 73 times to 1 tire rotation, very easy and fast way to see what's in there. If it has been changed the tag and axle stampings will probably be incorrect so the only way to know for sure is to get your hands dirty. My two cents...
