3.73 vs 4.10, spd auto?

I know this has been discussed previously, with some saying that the 4. 10 delivers better fuel mileage for all around use. With more people now in 6. 7's with the auto, I was wondering what everybody thinks, going to be in a new truck in a while, and trying to decide.

I have 4. 10's and wished I HAD 3. 73's

i believe the 4. 10 is a towing gear, 3. 73 is more for highway cruise type speed. not sure with the new fandangaled transmisions, i have a '06 auto running about 2300 at about 80mph. down the road i will get an under/overdrive.

Depends on what your going to do with the truck. The MPH and RPMs I saw posted with 4. 10s was I thought the cats meow with the 6 speed auto.

Got a 08 with 3. 73's and a automatic. We just pulled our 14. 5K lb 5th wheel from Minn to Texas and the 3. 73 was just fine. At times I put it in 5th and the RPM's kept her going perfect. If you are going to pull heavy in the mountains maybe you want 4. 0's. Just my opinion.

I'd recommend the 3. 73's or even 3. 55's or 3. 42's if you can get them. The Cummins likes to work at lower rpm's. The new auto with the double overdrive ratio's will keep you in the proper power band if you decide to do a lot of towing, and the higher rear gears will go a long ways to help you get better fuel mileage.

Trailer weight is 9800 lbs empty, around 14K max. Sounds like the 3. 73's will do the job, engine appears to be pretty healthy in the 1600-2000 rpm range, just based on test drive. I do drive in the Appalachians quite a bit, I would think that one direct drive gear and two overdrives make it pretty easy to match up rpm's and sweet spot in torque curve pretty easily. bunch of threads on this very topic but I believe you can no longer order a new truck with 3. 73s. . may have some luck gettting one that is currently on the lot.

3. 73 is the standard gear and no need to order as that is what it comes with or so it has been since 03. Has that been changed?

when I placed my order for my 08, 4. 10's where all I could get on my Megacab dually.

I've had the option as far as I know, but I am looking at 3500 SRW. Maybe that is the diff?

I ordered my 08 Megacab 3500 dually right at 4 weeks ago from Adam Macomber. The 3. 73's were standard and the 4. 10's were the option. I chose the 3. 73's. The truck will see mostly highway miles with only a couple of travel trailer towing trips a year. It's supposed to be built tomorrow (1/17) and ship on the 21st... . I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas.

I love the 310"s in mine my best so far at 70 plus towing trailer was 16. 5and empty was 18. 5 so no cryin here
