I got up at 7am this morning, and at 7:15 started my truck and let it idle, it went to 1000 RPM right away... just like it should

I went inside , right as I close the down I hear what I believe is a trash truck or some old-rough running diesel, pulling in front of my house

well, I waited for it to leave, it didn't, so i go outside and ITS MY TRUCK!

well, all of you are right, the first time you hear 3-cyl mode, you about crap on yourself, I though the worst, it sounded like a big cammed V-8 at about 400RPM idle, heck it shook the truck side to side.

well, i tapped the brake, and it idled down to smooth 750rpm

this was at 19 degrees, I thought this happened at like 5 degrees ??

yeah it scared the **** out of me the first time also..... Do you hear any loud clicks when you are standing outside of your truck when its doing that? This si my first diesel i am not sure if its normal or what...

I wasn't aware that we had a 3 cylinder mode on these either. I asked about this once before, but got a mix of opinions. I am glad we do. Mine hasn't worked yet though. I have started mine in the low 20's and it only ramped up to 1000 rpm.

I thought they didn't have the cyl. shutdown. I have had my 04 in -20 and I haven't had it happen to mine. Maybe it's an early production 03 thing?

Mine will speed up to 1000rpm but does not go into 3cyl mode. In fact it takes two minutes of idle before it will speed up.

Just yesterday, mine went straight to 1,000 RPM upon startup

It was 27 degrees outside.

No 3 Cyl. Mode yet to happen here.

I swear the Da** high idle thing must be the flakiest system on this truck. I started mine in 7deg weather and let it idle for about 8 minutes and the idle never ramped up.

Then drove it 7 miles, and it was doing good blowing warm air, and after I stopped I let the truck run while going into the store. I came out and it had idled up. Then went back home and let it idle bringing stuff in the door for about 5 minutes and no high idle.

I think this is the only thing I HATE about the truck, the high idle seems to just work whenever it wants too.

My high idle has always worked good.

then I have got some problems,

heres how it went this morning:

8:25 started truck as usual (24 degrees), after about 1 minute, ramped up to 1000 RPMS, then 30 seconds later, started to lope and puff WHITE smoke in small puffs that are seperate, not one constant flow, but like - puff-pause-puff-pause, etc

but touch the brake, and all smooths out, within 3-4 seconds, down to nice and warm 750 RPMS

that sounds like 3-cyl mode, doesn't it?

OR is this related to my idle problem that a lot of people are having (loping idle thread)

Mine does the same thing it started loping BIG TIME so now i plug it in and it doesnt do it anymore there is something wrong it sounds like we need a flash. tommy let me know what you find out i dont think this is normal.

High idle specs

If I remember right, the high idle only works below 32°F, and there has to be no movement of the brake, clutch or gas for 45 seconds. Mine seems to be consistent. The truck was built in Oct. of 2002, but had the TSB reflash in May.

Then I always tap the go-pedal before leaving.

I don't know Tomeygun. You've got me thinking. I usually plug my truck in so I don't have to let it warm up while I clear the windows. I think I will let it go unplugged for a couple days to see what happens. I wish/hope we have the 3 cylinder mode. I can't figure out why they would delete it when it was in the previous ECM. Especially Cummins themselves.

Has anybody found out if it is like the older high idel program that came from the factory disabled and had to be turned on?

and the 3-cyl thing is still up in the air

Oh I know the high idle is, I meant the 3 cylinder mode. I have seen the 1000 rpm high idle a couples times. Just never had it do the 3 cykinder shut down.
