How great would the benefit be to keep the 3" exhaust minus the resonator and oem muffler and adding a low restriction walker?? How restrictive is the resonator anyway??? Sal

Don't know Sal but I took my resonator and muffler off, put 5 feet of 3" pipe with a Votex muffler made by Cherry Bomb set just in front of the rear axle and love it!!! The sound in the cab is just about the same but the sound out back on the passenger side is great. Check around your area and see if anyone has made a change so you can hear it, I think this is one of the easiest and inexpensive changes to be made!! Regards Pete

Based on dyno testing by myself and others, below about 300 hp the gain will not be over 5-10 hp going to low restriction 3" or 4". On the undervalved, at 380 hp, going from low restriction muffler in a 3" system to 4" system with no muffler was worth only 7 hp with the HX35 turbo. Of course the HX40 is another story. So, in summary, on a stock or almost stock 24 valve, the gain from doing anything to your exhaust is mostly achievement of the "sound" you prefer. One series of tests carefully performed on a dyno showed going from stock to 4" gave a couple psi boost and about 35 deg more egt, no change in hp. The Ram was 24 valve, and different types and leves of hp enhancements were tried.

In all seriousness here... .
After installing the 4" on my 24V. . the SOP meter... . (Seat Of Pants) found a DEFINATE IMPROVEMENT as far as power is concerned. .

The turbo spool-up was VASTLY SPED UP...

The power comes on like NOW.

Even my wife just sitting there in the passenger seat made a comment on the differance in power at W. O. T.

As far a the 3" system. . anything that reduces the back pressure in the pipes will help in the same manner.

Just my observations
Larry

Salmonator, I just last night cut off the oem muffler and resonator and put on the straight thru walker muffler. #ad

MUCH better throttle response and sound!! I took the oem muff and res off and put the walker on the end of the exhaust pipe that the res was hooked to and then put the new piece of pipe on from the muff to the tailpipe. That way I could weld the old hangers back on the new clamp to hold the new muff up. The part # for the walker is #21468 at NAPA. Less than $60. 00 with 2 new 3" clamps. I bought 5' 3" of pipe to put on so I could sraight pipe it to see if I liked the sound, NOPE. To much bbrraappp to it. #ad

Well I hope this helps... . JW

Compliments of Evan & MikeR (thanks guys!!) They drove all the way from Seattle just to get me straight-piped then drove all the way back home. For all that help and driving nearly 600 miles they only got free pizza (I owe you guys).

Ditto on what Larry Quinn says--enhanced turbo spool up, and the engine feels much more alive. Seems to breathe better. I'd be willing to bet the HP increase is measurable on an ETH with a K&N RE0880 filter. Seat of pants says 5-10hp minimum. OK, the sound probably has a placebic affect, but hey, a perceived boost in power = enjoyment, whether illusionary or actual reality.
