Went to start my truck the other day and my starter finally went had to click it a few times and it finally started. just in time before warranty is running out. If you read my other posts my truck was at the dealer about 3 weeks ago for a few problems and when I said my starter was hanging up they said they could not find anything wrong, so thankfully it went now so I can take it back and tell them "I told you it was hanging up"!!!LOL By the way I cant believe the price of a starter for these trucks! And I was told by the dealer you cant get new only remans. Is this true?? Said some Dodge trucks even have remans installed on the assembly line! Is this true or is this guy a ballbag? Can I demand a new one from the dealer or do I have to take a reman?? Retail pricing is around $450. 00. Also if they stick in a reman and it goes again is it covered?? Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving

RedNut,

I replaced my OE starter with a reman from Advanced Auto. It appears to be a Nippondenso. Looks Identical to the OE one. Cost $234. 00. No problems. I`d swear it was a new unit if it didn`t say reman on the box.

Its impossible to guess when the starter will hang up. Possibly damp cool weather plays a role. I dunno.

If your starter is hanging up, replace it. I rebuilt the solenoid on mine and It was alright for about a year. I went over the whole starting system. Replaced or tested everything. Got sick of the mysterious clicks & no crank sometimes, Hangups other times. Don`t screw around. Replace the starter.

Diesel Electric Service out of Casa Grande, Arizona has NEW starters for $350. 00 + S&H.

If your dealer will replace the starter under warranty, let them use the Reman. They are as good as new. (IMO)

Believe it or not, he's probably not "B. Sing" you about only getting reman. I called GM for a guy the other day who wanted a new alternator for his shivy. GM said,"Reman only. " They said they flat couldn't get a new one. GM doesn't sell them out, not even to their dealerships, so it doesn't sound out of the realm of possibility that DC would be the same.

Your service writer is right. Actually,no car manufacturer sells any brand new starters or alternators... only reman, which are just as good as new. Also, your reman starter should come with at least a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, parts and labor.

The warranty ran out on my 96 a month and a half after i drove it off the lot new with 7 miles on it.
I can say i still have the OE starter, want to guess how many times its been used in over 700,ooo mi.
As far as warranty if you BUY a new, from a dealer you may have a 12k or 36k warranty.
BUT !! Say if it is replaced on warranty 5 miles and 1 day befor the oe warranty runs out ,you now have a warranty of 5 miles or 1 day!!!!which ever comes first .
