8th digit of the VIN denotes motor, not trans. . Thou with the HO you can easily coorolate.

C = HO

6 = SO

Now on the body sheet there is a code that tells trans. On the top row of the body code plate there are 4 sets of "code". The 3rd one from the left is 3 digits and denotes the trans.

DDP or DDX = NV4500

DEC or DEE= NV5600

DEG = G56

DG8 = 48RE

DGP = 47RE

Well, you tell me whats more reliable. Shifter on the steering column or the eight digit? :-laf :-laf

Gosh I hate you smart guys :eek:... . would you believe, it was a test?:-laf

Now I have to change my notes, must have assumed... an HO = 48RE, that would fly until you throw a six speed in the mix.

OK, Thanks Guys... for not Flaming me. . only on this Forum(Class Act). I actually do learn by my mistakes, usually the first time. .

Cerb/AH, keep up the good info, I'm certain(not assuming)we all appreciate your input. Jess

MY 03 build started in July 02. I know at least the firts 2 months the HO was not available and not sure when it was in numbers, October I believe was when they were easy to get.

Jan 03 then you could get the HO with the auto becuase the 48RE was available.

I find this interesting. I was following the evolution of the 3rd Gens pretty closely in 2002 and don't remember anyone having difficulty getting the HO early on. On September 7, 2002, we it put brand new 3rd Gen HO on the dyno at Diesel Thunder in Spokane. With 83 miles on the odometer it put down 262hp. In the Northwest the 3rd Gens were just starting to trickle into dealerships at that time. A month before when I was at Dave Smith Motors the only 3rd Gen they had on the lot was a manufacturer's demo truck. . . wasn't available for test driving.

The HO was NOT available W/Auto until after Jan,1,03. The HO was available in the 6Speed Nv5600 from July 02 to 04. 5 ,then the 325 Motor appear. it was shortly after Jan 03 that the SO was drop entirely. My 03 was order in Aug of 02 Build Date 10-22-02, SPECs are 250/SO 47re. . With VP rods, 8 holes sprayers,the good cam. . The So call HO gallery cooling was NO more then a marketing Pitch. I upgraded the Trans at 235 miles it lasted until Dec 09 with 104k ,it was still good but getting tired, I then built a DG 48re. This truck is heavily Modded With 126k on the factory sprayers,I will replace the injectors when they fail or 300k (WCF).
