OK Gang! Put yer thinkin' caps on and step inside.

1943 Dodge Carryall/Cummins 4BTA

My brother in law and I were talking about putting a 3116 CAT engine into a pickup truck. He wants to put it into a older chevy pickup. Has anyone ever installed one in a pickup before and what adapters are needed. I know it will be a tight fit but I was just courious how bad of a deal it could turn into if we ever do this project.

thanks

Paul

the 3116 engine was avalable in some gm trucks [like the kodiak & topkicks] so there are transmissions avalable for them. i think also they might have been in the 3500HD's [the hd cab&chassis truck: drop i beam front axle, 19. 5 wheels from factory]

Not to mention how much fun setting injectors is on them, keep a piece of plywood handy :)

I know a contractor that has some of those engines laying around. He gets a certified rebuild on all his 953b. Setting the injectors are easy when you have the tool group. I have the problem is rigging it into a truck. So I guess no one has done it before. I was also wanting the truck to be a 4wd too. Do you all have any sugestions on what brand truck would be the coolest or the best to do this in? Thanks

Find another engine...

The 3116 is junk... Head gasket and injector problems are plentiful, and very expensive to fix. The 3126 is better, but not by much. Injectors and other fuel system componets are more expensive than the 3116. Bottom line, avoid the Cat motor. My question for you is why would you guys even want a Cat in that thing? It's overpriced and undergood, not to mention gutless.

Find yourself an 8. 3L (505 ci) Cummins, 12 valve. They are very good engines, and can make some serious power. There are a lot of different configuations available too, for all sorts of applications. I most commonly work on the 325/1050 version, and I am always impressedon how well they run. Power can be upped to 500HP easily... Engine weight is about the same as the Cat, maybe 50-100 lbs less.

Yea I can get a tool kits. #1 The injector sleeve replacement tool kit. #2 injector sync and timing tool kit. Like I said that is the least of my problems. I know the problems that they have and if I ever get completed it's not like I'm going to drive this everyday. I thought it would be a neat conversion. Also don't forget about the camshaft problems and push tube problems. Yea the 3126 are a better engine well at least it is a improvement from the 3116. I know that the engine is over priced ect... . but I'm sure I might get this one for cheep. I guess I can look for other engines too.

Good Lord man, the 3408's are the most expensive Cat's to work on. Bet it made some crazy horsepower though.

Back to the subject though, I say build a 1693, but it is a tad to big to go in a truck that you want to use it for. ;) :D

Sounds like the pilot car needed some bombing!:D

3408's can't be as expensive as 1693's or even 343's. Got a customer that has a pile of 343's and it is not uncommon for him to spend $40-50,000 on an overhaul. The parts are getting expensive for those old cats!

i have seen a couple of chivvy 3500 hd 1992 vintage trucks with 3100 series engine in them. Not for sure anymore if the 26 or the 16. They were from Caterpillar engine r&d. They brought experimental c-15s to our shop several years ago, hauling it on the back of the chivvy's flatbed. The 3100 was a VERY tight fit, exclamation on VERY!! No room for a fan, if memeory serves, I think they had a pusher on the front. Belts looked like a nightmare to replace. They had it hooked to the chivvy auto overdrive. Had to drive it easy, they said they had problems tearing up the bell housings. Had good power, they said, but they only were getting 10 mpg out of them.

I work on the 3100s too and don't like them, they are just plenty peculuar to me. I like the simplicity of an old 3306. I like the new c-9's too. So far they have been a good motor, I would like to get ahold of one in a truck, they pull awfully good in the new Challenger tractors.

316 or did u mean 3126 if im not mistaken 3116 and 3176 engs were scrapped because they were such big piles of junk3126 is the medium duty by cat its 7. 2 liter but if u want big eng go with 12 c-series they have replaceable wet liner in them just like the bigger displacement dieselsbut they use p-7100 fule pumps on some of them so u can get real big power out of themjust amke sure u have a big transmission to go behind them or ull be trshing some trannies i just got done puttin a 13spd in my dodge it wasnt that bad to in stall but doin an eng swapp is going to be fun lol

yea I was meaning a 3116 engine. See I belive that that engine is a 7. 1 liter and a 3126 is a 7. 2 liter and the early 3126 were the same fuel system as a 3116 then later they when to the heui system. I belive the 3176 are still being produced not exactly sure. Are you meaning a C12 C14 and C16? or are your meaning a 3406C or a 3126 C???? B/c the C12, 14, 16's don't have injection pumps correct me if I'm worng. Also I have never seen a CAT engine with a bosh pump. CAT makes their own pumps. How did you do your transmission swap and what trany did you install?

3176 or C10 doesn't have an injection pump, has unit injectors, as does the 3196 or C12. 3176-3196 are numbers used in heavy equipment, C10-C12 are the same but are truck engines, all marketing. When the 3176-3196 came out in trucks they had aluminium spacer blocks turned out to be junk, so cat went away from the aluminium spacer to a complete block and called them C10-C12's to get away from the stigma in the trucking industry. Follow??

3116's were intitially made for the Kodiak chevy trucks, Cat had a contract saying they could only sell the 3116 to Chevrolet. So they made the bore slightly larger and called the engines they sold to everyone else a 3126. Then the 3126B came about which I think started the evolution of unit injection and 3 Valve head. I think this is all correct, been several years since I had 3100's school.

has anybody noticed how hard AKdiesel pushes boyces stuff? We all know about boyce equipment. . They're overpriced, but do have a decent inventory.

My $. 02

MMiller, you are dead on. Only other thing is all 3116 (6. 6L), 3126 (7. 2L), 3126B (7. 2L 3valve head) have unit injectors. Some 3116's were mechanical controlled, some were HEUI. All truck 3126's were HEUI, marine/indust were mostly mechanical.

Well Brayden how bout you just keep your $. 02 to yourself, if your gonna pick the flies out of the horse ^%$% you better be ready to get some on ya'!!!!! I just like to put out some good links to help people BUDDY!!!!!! I like to share when I've found something good with people who might appreciate it!!!!!!! I've done business with the folks at Boyce and they do a wonderful job and their prices aren't high either consider what you're getting, you get what you pay for PAL!!!! For example: I bought a complete bearing and seal kit (when I say complete I mean everything)for a 91 Dodge Dana 60 front axle for $150 plus freight includes: trunnion bearings & seals, side bearings & races, inner & outer pinnion bearings, races & seal, wheel bearings & seals and torrington bearings for the axle shafts at the spindle. Plus other numerous parts for my 1954 GMC 2-1/2 ton 6x6. And their prices were an 1/8th the price on that bearing kit than you'd get at a parts store!! SO BRAYDEN OPEN MOUTH INSERT FOOT!!

BRAYDEN; IF ALL YOU'RE GONNA DO IS WHINE ABOUT "HOW HARD AKDIESEL PUSHES BOYCE STUFF" THEN DON'T REPLY TO MY POST, DON'T EVEN READ MY POST!!!!

just my $10. 00 worth
