Well, it looks like my number may be up?

The Mrs. borrowed the truck today and on her 2nd run came home abruptly citing a burnt smell outside. (truck's unloaded, wife knows how to drive stick and babies rig compared to how I drive. )

I checked all the eletrical stuff I've added, no shorts, no probs, then I check the rear calipers, no signs of overheating, or foul smell. Then up to the bellhousing and the vent between the front cover and rear and take a shallow sniff to discover what appears to be the source of the stink.

I did a test drive, no dectable slippage, but smell persisted and is either coming from the bellhousing or the passenger's side of the motor at or below the turbo?

Checked turbo, impeller spins freely, no contact scars.

Furthermore, I did not notice the block crack that I've seen mentioned in other posts.

If it is the clutch, I'm leaning towards a Southbend?

Any thoughts or comments.

Thx

At 33k you probly know this but just in case.

Have you changed the oil lately? Some oil brands have a bad smell for the first few hundred miles.

I wish... the next one is 750 miles off, last one about 3K ago. I run 76's Royal Triton QLT which has substantially reduced oil sheer stinkage.

Thx for the heads up.

Lucky for me the Mrs. is "picky" about who she'll get into it with...

typically is the joker that rides her back bumper while she's passing someone...

you know how it goes, 6th gear roll on, pedal onto the steel, egt's race to 1150 boost running upwards, JAMES BOND SMOKE SCREEN out the 5" tailpipe and the quest to push 3. 5 tons of Ram through the air @ 110mph is in full tilt... :--)

:mad:I left out the part where her head starts spinning around like a lawm sprinkler and her eyese light up red like LED's and in a voice not of this earth she grumbles, "Its on like Donkey Kong... "

she probably just got the clutch hotter than you ever have. and it let her know about it.

my wife tends to rev the truck and slip it as she takes off. i just dump it and let that torque pull me out of the hole.

even if she heated it a little, it should last you quite a while. but that is, a very good reason to get a new South Bend and you can even put the guilt trip on her :D

It's the clutch alright.

Fortunately it is in the hands of the dealerships truly professional (diesel) mechanic and I'm awaiting his determination as to "cause of death" and the extent of damage.

Long story short, transmission was out of the truck less than 3K miles ago to replace oil pan. (work done by different mechanic, same shop)

More to come.

A moment of silence for the OEM clutch...

apparently the pressure plate was the culprit?

A few hotspots on the $950 flywheel, but they may be machineable.

Anywho, the score is DEE 1/Wallet -1

Report on new clutch to follow.
