Can someone please tell me how one puts 33 gallons of diesel in a 32 gallon tank. No I didn't "top it off" or do a jig in the bed of the truck. The low fuel light illuminated only about 2 minutes before I got fuel. Just wondering if those "in the know" have some insight.

Thanks everyone and have a great '09.

'06 Factory Service Manual indicates the following capacities:

1500 Short Box 98 L (26 gal. )*

2500/3500 Short Box 128L (34 gal. )*

All Long Box 132 L (35 gal. )*

*Nominal refill capacities are shown. A variation may be observed from vehicle to vehicle due to manufacturing tolerance and refill procedure

42 gallon

I installed a vent tank kit. before reinstalling the tank it was wipe clean and dry. I put in a 5 gallon can of fuel the drove two miles and filled up with 37 more gallons. So the tank has to be close to 42 gallons, so from the factor there 8 gallons of air left in the tank for expantion of fuel.

PS. Gas station get nab for pumps out of calabration more often than you would think.....

Oo.

Every once in a while the news will do a fuel station expose. With the newer electronic pumps it's very easy for the station to skim off the top. I think government investigators only check for proper fuel level at 5 and 10gal. If you bought 3, 7 or more than 12gallons you were getting ripped off at suspect stations. If the station suspects an investigation a flip of the switch calibrated the pump to read correctly.

You're problem as others have said is the built in expansion area designed for warm fuel.

The only time THAT I KNOW OF where the pump was out of calibration when I filled up was somewhere between Chicago & St Louis.

My truck was sucking fumes and I know it will hold close to 40 gallons. I filled it to the brim and the pump only said 26 gallons.

Yes, I told the guy inside, but still only paid for 26.

Ha, Ha. One for the good guys. The error is usually not in favor of the consumer.

Maybe PA is different from other states, but our pumps have to be checked every 6 months, and the calibration procedure can detect a 1 oz variance. I don't consider myself part of the 'public' on this subject as I work in the industry. Every location that calibration could be defeated has a tamper-proof seal on it, so the state inspector would have to be paid off. I don't know of many station owners who would risk the $100k fine and permanent loss of a license to sell gas to fiddle around with their pumps.
