Hey guys could use a little help here I do some side work (moonlight) for a farmer There 97 Freightliner has a 375hp 3406E in it Long story short the crank is broke in the throw near #1 rod We were going to locate aused engine and not fix this one Now they have decided to fix what they got Question is to line bore or not? Local Cat dealer said if it looks ok dont worry Another local diesel shop said dont put it together without haveing it checked Also does anyone have a manual they would be willing to lend/rent? I cant steal the one from work as we have jobs in progress Plus the old guy who runs the shop wont let it go Its along story Any help would be great Thanks Craig

Been there, done that. Cat has a very crappy way of hardening their cranks; breakage is pretty common. They usually leave a nasty gouge in the main web that will need filed off. After that, torque all the main caps on and check line bore for alignment. Don't forget to measure each bore for correct size and check for out-of-roundness. If you want to play it safe, just have it line-honed. It's alot cheaper than boring and is usually all you need. Main bearing bore spec. is 5. 1138" +or-. 0005". Caps get torqued to 200 ft. lbs. plus 120 degrees(2 flats)
