I just got a rude awakening from my insurance company (AARP underwritten by Hartford) who told me my recently purchased 3500 is uninsurable through them. They state it exceeds the 10,000lb GVWR they insure up to. Also stated was the fact other insurance companies are the same. This would have greatly affected my purchase decision, but was not knowledgeable enough to know this would be an issue.

I told them I use the truck for a cabover camper that exceeded the weight capacity of a 3/4T for personal use. They didn't care what it was used for, it was in their eyes, now a commercial vehicle, no longer private use. I then called a recreational insurer who covers tow vehicles for 5th wheels etc. Guess what? The truck isn't heavy enough to be insured. Seems the 1 tons are in a class by themselves.

What have you guys run into or suggest for someone to insure with? I got a quote from AAA who is running about double what I was paying for the 2500 I just sold. This is really discouraging. Thanks

i pay 3000. 00 per year on 4 of my eight vehicles (the other four are classics)... that includes my dually and a teenager..... and i am with AAA and in california!!... . oh that also includes both travel/toy hauler trailers also... . 100/300 75k coverages

With all the vehicles does AAA give a better discount? And a teenager to boot? I have only the two vehicles to insure along with the camper. Were you able to insure your classic's? I own a '30 model A coupe which I insure through a old car company. I tried them but they only insure old cars. AAA wants $2300/yr for our Jeep Wrangler and the '96 3500w/camper. 100k/300k w/250ded.comp/500ded coll/50kprop damage. Clean driving records. I must live in the wrong part of the state!

The company I insure with is American Family Ins. Co. I pay just a shade over 2400/year for my 2 Dodges, my 16 yr old sons Ford, my house, boat and 5th wheel rv. I don't know if they are available in California but if they are you might check with them. Excellent customer and claims service.

I had no problem with State Farm for my truck and camper. The premium is just a little more then it was for my '95 with camper.

Ditto on the Good Sams Club. Saves me over $800 a year on house/auto insurance. They have better standard/base coverage also than when I had state farm.

Srehberg... . I have my 47 ForD, 67 Falcon and two 68 MBZ's converts with Hagerty... . 800. 00 per year... . looks like you and I have the same type of vehicles... . I will say that rates up north (my guess is that you are actually with CSAA as AAA is different up in your neck of the woods... . ) are a little higher... . shop around... Mercury might be your best bet... just a thought

also... my teenage boy added 970. 00 per year on to my policy... he is rated on my jeep but drives my taurus

Thanks for the company references, I will be on the phone to all of them today. I hate shopping for insurance but I need the coverage. I still can't believe the restrictions for a 3500, seems bizarre to me when they will insure a huge bus type motorhome without any problems. Nuts.

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=1327471#I have a 3500 SRW insured through AARP and have had since it was new. I do not have a camper and load rating for vehicle (wrong term I am sure) is 9900 pounds. So maybe that is why. Since it is less than 10,000 pounds. I have always believed there was a non engineering reason the vehicle was rated at less than 10,000 pounds. Did they mention age of vehicle or any other reason.

it doesnt help to switch or go with cheaper rated companies when it comes to this sort of thing. I have always felt that way and posts like this confirm it.

I have had State Farm since i started driving (@16yrs old) I'm now 34 and have a lot more items to insure and its all with State Farm. for that 18 years of loyalty they have returned it with ease of use and a non-cancelation policy for me. my agent and his staff know us on a personal level not just as clients. that sort of repore comes from sticking with them/us.

I have my home, truck, Magnum, TH/RV, four dirt bikes and one ATV insured through them along with a $1mil balloon policy on my wife and I for liability. i bet i dont pay more than 3k yr for all of it. the house is the most and its a bit over $900 a yr. that's for a 140K house 40K barn on 6 acres with a pond.

Wawanesa.

Smaller company only insures good drivers and are very particular about who they pick up. I've filed a vandalism claim with them and a rear ender, both taken care of with out hassle. They even wrote out the claim check to a offroad fab shop, not an autobody shop!

$1600/yr for my 2003 2500 CTD 4x, 2001 tacoma 4x, 1991 toyota pu, $18k slide in camper.

I have a Chris Ruths steak dinner comming from a friend who I refered to them. My buddy switched from Allstate who had his autos and house policy (discounts implied), and saved $1300yr on his 2001 CTD, 2004 acura, and 2002 Lance camper. He was so happy he's buying me and the wife a $150 dinner!

ToddT, I understand about loyalty to the company and the service, however there was no loyalty extended to me when I went to insure the 3500. They flat told me there was no way they would insure the truck due to the GVWR exceeding 10,000lbs. As I mentioned possibly, they will however, insure a huge motorhome bus that the driver has had no formal training without a problem. That thing has to out weigh my 3500 a couple times over. I would stay with AARP if they insured me but what other option is there?

The SRW truck can be insured due to the GVWR. The insurance issue blind sided me, I never saw that one coming.

Try State Farm.

Thats who we are insured with as well for our 1 ton dually.

SRehberg, I notice that you are in Stockton. We live near Jackson (about 30 miles east) so geographical location should be no problem with State Farm.

Good Luck,

Greg

I'm with State Farm. 2005 Ram 3500 4x4

2000 Volks. cabrio conv.

2004 Suzuki GSXR1000

Wife and I are both 27 and it cost us $2076 for full coverage on everything.

I inquired with GMAC with Good Sam and asked about insuring the house also. They asked alot of questions on the house and then asked if I had any dogs and what breed. I told them 1 German Sheppard. They denied me home insurance as I have an undesirable breed of dog. I told them that dog is one reason nobody steals anything around the house and they can stick the insurance where the sun don't shine. I will stay with State Farm.

There are alot of good insurance companies out there, but you really need to have a good agent more than anything else. As they'll get further with the company then you would if there was a problem.

Nathan

GFritsch, we're almost neighbors! I'll give them a call. I have phone ear itis I think, been on that stupid thing most of the day. The rates sure vary from one company to another. I'll give them a try and see what they can do.

Sounds like State Farm has been good to most people. I know what you mean about picky companies. I have had my homeowner's turned down today due to galvanized plumbing instead of plastic. The other issue was brick veneer on the front of the house 4ft high, the company wouldn't touch it even though the brick had nothing to do with structure. These companies are bizarre.
