2500 vs 3500 SRW

I am looking at ordering a 2500 or 3500 HO. From what I have been observing, unless I have been missing something, it seems as if the 3500 single wheel rear axle comes in short box only. I like the smaller size of the short box, but it's nice to have the room of the long box, especially when a large storage box is in it for all my junk. The turning base is a bit shorter with the SB as well. They gotta' be making a SB and LB in a SWB. Any reasonable observations as to the advantages between a SB and LB?

Do the power folding trailer mirrors have heaters and do they seem to work well, meaning, do they have good visibility around a 5th wheel, like 30' long? I pull in tandem with an ATV trailer behind the camper. Total length, 56' as measured by a Kansas state trooper after receiving a speeding ticket (77 in a 60, I diligently observe the speed limits now). I would also like to try the new 48RE auto, depending on the price and the engine HP/torque rating with the 48RE. I don't know if I want to shift one more gear with the 6 spd than I do with my current 5 spd. Any suggestions?

For my use, the 3500 single is the way to go as I have a tendency to load it up in the back. I may need the 11/5 rear end and the overloads. I have the camper overloads on my '01 and had them on my '96 V-10 2500 auto had 'em too. I weighed in once at the dump with 7200 # of rocky dirt in back. The next day I filled the box even more full with sand, piled up about half way up the back window. It was squatin' a bit, but seemed to handle the loads.

I see there are a several 2500's and 3500's in a holding pattern at the local Dodge dealer. Apparently, they have been pulled from the lot as they are waiting for a new transmission fluid line check valve. Some of the 47REs have overheating problems related to this check valve.

If I can work it out, other options include limited slip, dimming mirror, premium seats, alum wheels, fog lamps, protection group, trailer tow. After I get it, the stereo will be taken out so a new Alpine XM unit with new door speakers and sub woofers (JL's)under the rear seat, and some Goodyear 285 MTRs will be mounted. I have the XM and MRTs now, both are great.

Dan- they do make a 3500 LB SRW, at least you can build one on the Dodge site. And you don't want the 2500 with the longer springs and no helpers (at least there are none stock) with your loads you will be lo-ridin'.

Same with the engine, transmission, sounds like you need the HO with the 48RE (performance yet to be determined) or a bombed SO with an up-rated 47RE.

Good luck on your decision... . I'm waiting for some 48's to hit the road before I land on an '03, either way it will be an HO.

BTW, the power tow mirrors should be excellent; I use the non-powered earlier ones and see the back on my 28' car trailer like it was 10 feet long.

You can get long and short bed but either way you have to get the QC. The mirrors are great, dont pass em up. The camper package is gone, the 2500 does not come with overload springs and they are now standard on the 3500.

There is a "Trailer Tow Group" which amounted to a Class IV hitch, a 7 pin wiring harness and the harness to hook up a trailer brake. The package was $275 on my truck. There is also a 4 pin hookup that I think came with the package. I don't normally use the hitch but I do have the set-up and instead of using a ball I have a clevis pin there to use as a rear "tow hook" and it works great. I think the package was worth it even tho they are no longer using the rear sway bar.

A lot of the confusion with the 3500 SRW is from the way Dodge catalogs it. The 3500 SRW Quad shortbed is a standalone model. The 3500 SRW Quad longbed is simply an option on the DRW truck (AR9 - Single Rear Wheel package).

The 4-pin wiring outlet is standard on all Ram HDs; the 7-pin and class IV hitch is what makes the Trailer Towing group.

Dan,

are you planning to use wheels from your old truck?

they won't fit,new trucks have 17in rims. from what I here 16s won't clear calipers. mike

I'll march right down to my local Goodyear store and deal on trading in my new truck tires and the MTRs on my current truck with less than 2K on the MTRs.

As per the quote from KCJackson, "The 3500 SRW Quad longbed is simply an option on the DRW truck (AR9 - Single Rear Wheel package). " I've seen that option on the web. thanks!

I have been assured from a friend of mine who is a transmission tech after a look a the mopar transmission book that the new 48RE will be a decent transmission. He rattled off the differences, I didn't take notes. (Sorry) Gotta' flush 'em out every 50k and not have a lead foot all the time, sometimes like me. I will drive the 6 spd HO first to see if I like it anyway, and try out a SO with a 47RE.
