We've got a 08 5500 and I've had that truck over 80... . could the early trucks not have this feature... .

We have a 10L Cat engine in a IH truck... . when we bought the truck we found it wouldn't go over 60 mph... . a trip to the Cat dealer and 2 minutes with a programmer and the limit was removed and reset to the max RPM for the engine... . On some of the roads in AZ, NV, WY the same speed limit is for used for cars and trucks. .

I assume a Cummins dealer can do this for you with his scan tool for a fee... .

Hope this helps. .

Another TDR member and I visited a dealer near his home in OK advertising 4500/5500s in stock back in 2007. We test drove a 2007. 5 4500. It was speed limited at 76 mph. That's when I realized they were speed governed. The salesman riding with us told us it was because of the tires, the dealership had already asked Dodge.

If I owned one I'd be visiting a Cummins dealer to ask if the engine could be reprogrammed to increase top speed but I don't think it is possible. Cummins ISB engines installed in Dodges don't use the same software as ISBs in MDTs.

Hey Harvey, I still don't understand why the bigger trucks engines are detuned? It seems to me with the bigger/heavier loads that the truck is rated for, that they would want the same HP or more than the 2500 & 3500 trucks have to help get the larger loads moving and maintain speed on grades & such?

The difference is probably only software. I wish it was a buyer's choice when the truck was ordered or purchased. The 305hp/610tq engine does an excellent job for ordinary driving or towing but there have been a few times I've wished for the 325hp/650tq of the pickup versions when I wanted to pass some fool who kept speeding up.

If you watch the boost and egt gauge under full throttle acceleration on a C&C you can see the difference in the fueling map compared to a pickup. Highway acceleration between 50 and 90 mph on the C&C is where the difference is obvious. My previous '06 would easily outrun this truck in that speed range.

In April or May of 07 we ordered our 08... . they were only built as 08 models... as I remember, our dealers, both Dave Smith and Dishman here, had their orders put on hold until the owners ordered the required tooling and lifts for this roll out...

Than our truck sat for 60 days in TX on hold from DC because of some issue... They sort of ran in circles with what was wrong... never really told us... But we were told that all 4500 & 5500 were being held up... As I remember it was mid Sept when our new truck arrived... maybe late Sept... (it has Sept Tabs)

There were 3 on the transport truck that brought ours into town, mine and 2 for the electrical PUD here... Inland Power...

I remember when you posted about the ordered 5500 and the delays. It must have been in September or October when we looked at and test drove the 4500 at an OK dealer. I ordered my '08 the first few days of January 2008 not very long after that visit and test drive.
