Im ready to order some 370 injectors for my 98 4x4 5spd i already have a #11 camplate will my stock clutch handle this setup or do i need to by a southbend clutch first? Thanks Jason
Hook- I'm surprised your clutch isn't singing to you with only the #11 plate! I started out with a 6 plate and learned early. Plan on where you're going to end up in HP, and then buy the right clutch before you get there. Talk to some of the power guru's in your area and get a feel for what's avavilable and practical. A little research will save bucks.
Here's another suggestion. Save the $ you were planning for the injectors, get the clutch & a #0 plate. The plate is the cheapest fuel per $ & you're gonna need a clutch anyway.
If i went with the #0 plate what are egts like with this plate,if i went with clutch and a new plate instead of injectors. Whats the best alternative to high egts hx40 or can i just put on a 16cm housing also can a 16 cm housing be used with the factory 3in exhaust or would i have to go to 4in?Thanks Jason
See what I mean? For the price of injectors, you can buy a nice 4" exhaust system. For about $150 you can get the 16cm exhaust hausing that will fit your 3" system. I found that upgrading from the 12cm to 16cm housing made more of a difference in my EGT than the 4" exhaust did. I'm guessing that a new turbo should come with that "0" plate. How much horsepower do you want? Buy the clutch first.
I'm assuming you're starting @ 215 HP Jason, correct? If so, the stock HX40 isn't big enough for the #0 with 300 hp injectors. EGT will still be high with stock injectors, but may be ok slid back of center. The beauty is that you can't upgrade the plate anymore.
The HX40 will require 4" exhaust. Go to Piers & get his HX40-16 when the time comes. In the mean time, clutch then #0, maybe 1/16 back of center to start & check EGT. No doubt it'll be up there. The good thing is Bosch was kind enough to let us slide it back of center.
The #0 is an animal in the 215 with lots & lots of low end fuel ... right where EGT gets high. It makes the whole cab & shift levers vibrate & howl. You'll have to take it easy on the throttle on the curves. The back end get's squirelly & breaks free.
Depending on $, your 1st turbo upgrade could be a 16cm housing. I think drawson said he reduced EGT by 150 degrees with the 16.
Hookemup... I'm in the same boat as you, except I already have the 370 injectors in and the #11 camplate is in the garage waiting for me to do the cluch.
Forrest, I like the way you describe the sounds your truck makes. :-laf
Get the clutch first and get the STRONGEST one available for your truck. When I had just the #11 plate put in, my original clutch went KA-BOOM! Had to wait over a week to get it back together.
As I said, get the STRONGEST Southbend you can for your '98.
Because, having all the power in the world means nothing if you can't get it to the rear wheels.
So are there any draw backs to putting on the 16cm housing also i assume i would use a non wastegate housing?Whats the #0 plate rated at hp/tq. Im thinking about putting the con o southbend clutch in for you all running this clutch what are your likes and dislikes. Thanks Jason
Whats the #0 plate rated at hp/tq. ... . lol. It's only a rack stop, there is no HP rating. The 16 housing is non-wastegated, on the install take the turbo apart on the truck and not the bench as they are usually stuck together a bit!
