Pump question

ISB Fuel Milage while Towing a 4k Jeep

Just took my 370's out for the winter. Why? So I don't kill myself or someone else. . The power right off idle is Fricking Fantastic when it's on dry roads, but deadly if the pavement is wet, or heaven forbid, icy!
Now that I've got everyones attention, here
are my questions:

1. How can I get the power curve up a little higher (rpm wise)? Off idle it's a freight train, then about 2100 there's a slight power loss then about 3000, the horses get kicked in the rear again, and away we go. (then I chicken out due to the high EGT)
2. How do get my EGT DOWN?? I can hit 1500 deg. in less than a 1/4 mile. I've only done this twice and the first time it scared the **** out of me. My boost gage only goes to 30
and the needle goes WAY past 30 when this happens. Stock turbo and 4" exhaust all the way back. Plate has been moved from full forward to just back of stock position, with very little difference in EGT.
3. Is it my plate? I'm running a JRE stage 3.
I put the gov. spring kit in and was very dissapointed with the results using the 230 injectors. Had great power off idle but lost power and S-l-o-w EGT build up at around 2100
rpm. (EGT would only go to 900) When I installed the 370's, wow. Had plenty of power, but too much EGT.
I'd love to keep the 370's in, but I've got to figure a way to control the power and EGT first. Piers? KoaMan? John? Thanks guys.

NOTE TO SELF: This trying to run with the big boys is going to kill me... ... .

Sounds like you need to get that pump on a stand. You shouldn't have that much variation in the RPM range. It also sounds like you need a bigger turbo. IMO. The EGT's are going to be there because you have the fuel flow to warrant those high EGT's. A bigger turbo will help. LOL@note to self!

Don't know what to do about the EGTs (since you already moved yur plate back) other than getting a bigger turbo housing. As far as the other problem, I would put about 1000 lbs in the bed for added traction. My truck does not have a problem on wet roads, but I haven't had the pleasure of driving on ice yet. #ad

Stacked and Koa-Man,

Thanks! I was afraid that my next step was going to be a pump stand. Oh well, what's a few more dollars!!! (Man, good thing I'm NOT married... I'll Just have to buy the dog cheaper food. . )
My truck already tips the scales at 7410 lbs. with driver (when I drag race it). Throw in the rescue equipment I usually carry and it just squeeks in under 8000 lbs!!
Anybody know the best injector shop to go to in the NW Ohio area. I'm willing to travel to get it done right the FIRST time.
Thanks again guys. Your the best!!

Hey, I dont usually say much in this forum b/c i'm a 24 valver'. I know that Diesel Injection Of Columbus,OH will do it for ya, they do pumps for alot of OSTPA, ATPA, and NTPA tractor pullers. Me and a friend of mine who has a 94 Cummins, talked to a technician from Columbus Diesel at the Ohio Farm Science Review that was held in London,OH. He told my friend to bring his up and they would do whatever he wanted done to it. Hope this can be of some help. Send me and e-mail if you have any other questions or want the number for there.

It sounds like its time to ditch the stock turbo housing and install a 16cm2. With all that fueling, your 12CM2 turbo housing is probably choking the engine. The larger housing will let the engine breath & lower EGT.
I`m running a JRE recommended combination... . and I can`t get my EGT over 1100 degrees. #ad

It must be your injection pump. Its alot stronger than my 94.

To reduce your power you should call BD about their valet switch kit. I think it basically bleeds off the boost signal to the AFC, thus limiting fueling. You could plug the hose which comes out of the intake and goes into the AFC and see if that is enough reduction in power before buying the kit.

Good luck in your quest for more and less power!

bigkavr, Columbus is a great shop! They will take care of you, that's for sure. If you want to come down to Muncie and go to Dave's Diesel, we can hang out! They can help you too! Email me for details.

bigkavr:

I am glad to hear that your "flat spot"
is gone now too!! With you, "Koa Man" and
myself that makes three (3) members that
have solved that problem with the 370
injectors!

However, sorry to hear about the EGT
problems. As you know, when I went to
the "Scheid Diesel Rally" back in Sept.
I had them "recalibrate" my pump. They
did this in conjunction with the install
of the governor spring kit and the AFC
spring kit. I am amazed that my EGT'S
are not higher than they were before!
I have to "push" the truck/engine hard
to get the EGT'S up to 1300 degrees. It
can be done, but I feel it is "control-
lable. " As "Stack-d and Jack'd" advised
you "it is probably time to put the
P7100 on the pump stand. " I too am
concerned about your RPM fluctuation.
Since "Scheid" "recalibrated" mine, it
pulls very evenly all the way up to
about 3400 RPM. The harder I push on
the accelerator the harder it pulls.
No fluctuation, just even, steady H. P!

I would highly recommend "Scheid Diesel"
in Terre Haute, Indiana. They are very
good at what they do and are a "Certified
Bosch Repair Facility. " I don't know if
the other locations would be closer, but
they also have shops in Lafayette,
Indiana and Effingham, Illinois. Below
are their phone #'s "bigkavr. "

1. ) Scheid Diesel, Terre Haute, Indiana
1-800-669-1593(Dan Scheid or John
(J. P. ) Pezan

2. ) Scheid Diesel, Lafayette, Indiana
1-800-669-1861

3. ) Scheid Diesel, Effingham, Illinois
1-800-669-1934

Dan Scheid and /or John (J. P. )Pezan will
"honestly work with you" to get the truck
running "like you want it too!" Like you,
I "didn't mind traveling to get the job
done right the first time. " It was over
900 miles for me and I'll be honest,...
if I had to do it again I would!

If this is too far for you e-mail me
or re-post a message. I have a new
"Certified Bosch Repair Facilities"
booklet and I would be glad to give
you the names of some of the shops
near you.

Take care "bigkavr!" And good luck
on the "recalibration. "

BTW, I hope to meet "Koa Man" in
Charlotte next month. He is coming
out here on business. One of us will
let you know how that goes.

Thanks everyone, for your input. This is a great site with folks who truly want to help.
When I installed the gov. spring kit, my problems intensified, and Ted J. did everything he could think of, short of comming to Ohio and picking up my truck to take back to his shop. Ted also came to the conclusion that my pump was out of calibration and needed to be put on a stand. Since I was running the 230 injectors at the time and I had a set of 370's just sitting on the shelf I figured "what the heck" throw them in and see what happens.
I think I've learned a few lessons. One of which is DON'T QUESTION TED J. . He knows. . The other is ASK THE GREAT FOLKS ON THIS SITE, SOONER!! Don't wait so long.
Thanks again for all your input. . The truck is going to the shop soon!!

bigkavr, Get the 16 CM2 housing. After doing lots of towing a back hoe around. I am very happy with this set up. It is by far the best towing set up to date on my truck and EGT aren't a problem. Clutch slippage is with my #11 plate all the way forward. I like you am worried about traction this winter. I am going to be putting my #12 plate in for this winter to see if this will make it more drivable.

John P, great advertisement for Sheid, I am so glad you are that happy with your truck. Sheid is great also, Dave's is closer, but anyone of the above mentioned shops are going to get you back on track bigkavr so you can slip and slide your way around this winter!

I'd think at this point you should get at least a bigger housing like the 16cm2 and if you want to run those kind of rpm's and have control of your egts your going to have to port your head and install a thicker head gasket to lower compression. These 12 valves go past their limit for flow at 2500 so the only way to truely control egts past there is by not looking at them or with the peddle(or have a above recomended pump shop set the pump up so it control pulling fuel out).
my 2 cents

Stack'd-n-Jack'd:

I realize it does seem like an "adver-
tisement" for "Scheid Diesel. " However,
I was "screwed over" by a so-called
"Certified Bosch Dealer" here in N. C.
when I had low power problems when my
truck was new. Dan Scheid helped me out
back then too and was able to warranty
all of the work for me AFTER that other
"certified" shop messed it up! Members
may not believe it but it does happen.

I just hate to see the other members
go somewhere and have something happen
to them like I went through. I was
seriously considering selling my 96'
and trying to buy back my old 92'CTD
which always ran good with the little
"160 H. P. Cummins!"

Take Care!

John, Stacked, My 6, and everyone else,

Thanks again for all your input. The phone call will be made this morning to get the pump "tickled" and back on track.

Thanks again guys!!!

Once again John, this typing stuff doesn't get the "jist" out as I wanted it too. I too am an advertisement because of the great service I receive from Dave's! So I completly understand.

Hey big,
Black Dog told you right he and I where at the Farm Science review and one of the boys that work on my cousins super and pro stock pulling tractors told me to bring my pump up there, they can do anything you want to it! They are definetly the place to turn to if you want to turn the fuel, someone metioned to me that, that might be the place where ole' smokin' Dave Mitchell gets his pump work done!!!
