Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 3rd gear gone, NV4500

Pulling dozer , shifted into 3rd and suddenly loose gear. All other gears shift fine. Is this gear splined, and could the splines have stripped? Has anyone else had this happen?

I've heard of it happening to sledpullers before, but not on the street. This wasn't a D9 was it?lol

Just my 450 JD which ways about 15,000 plus trailer. So is the entire main shaft needing replaced, why do all the other gears shift fine?

It sounds like you sheared the key for the countershaft third gear. It will need a complete teardown to fix it.
