I still don't know a whole lot about my transmission. :(

My rig is '02 auto, and I was wondering about TC lockup.

Does it occur while locked out of O. D. and in 3rd? While locked out of O. D. I can still feel what feels like 3 shifts. But the third shift isn't as firm and happens at about 38 mph. Is that my TC locking up? If the TC does lock up in 3rd will it still do it if you haven't manualy locked out O. D.

Sorry to ask so many questions at once, but like I said I don't know much.

  38 mph? Mine will lock up in 3rd at 26-28mph unless I'm under a fair amount of acceleration. Maybe there is something wrong with my truck. I know that I hate it when it does it!

it was explained to me that for the y2k and newer w/ OD on the sequence is 1 - 2 - 3 - lockup - 4 - lockup (w/ a brief unlock before getting 4th).

W/ OD off lockup still occurs in third.

Conveniently enough... that's how mine generally shifts.

For the 1999 the shop manual lists it as

OD on

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 lockup

OD off

1 - 2 - 3 lockup

and that is how if feels when I drive. 2000 may be different though?

Challenger-II...

I have the 3. 55 gears in my truck. Under normal acceleration I don't think I'm even in 3rd gear by 26 mph ( I could be wrong though, I've never payed close attention to what mph I shift into 2nd & 3rd ). It seems that the TC lockup is really soon after the second shift. I won't be driving the truck until later tonight, but I will pay close attention to what mph. the truck shifts to third under normal acceleration.

Shift programming in the PCM changes from year to year.

For the record, under light acceleration 2001 and 2002 Trucks shift 1 - 2 - 3 - lockup and then maintain lockup as they shift into 4th gear.

The 1999's unlocked before the 3-4 shift and then reapplied lockup again once in 4th gear.

Hope that helps clear up some of the confusion.

Strick-9,

My '99 shifts as you describe but, is it normal to lock-up (OD-off) in 3rd at ONLY 26-28 mph? :confused::{

Last night on my way home I payed attention to my trucks shift points. Under normal acceleration it goes like this,

1st - 2nd = 12 mph

2nd - 3rd = 28 mph

TC lockup = 38 mph

3rd - 4th = 50 mph

All shifts happened around 2000 RPM

Challenger,

Yes, it is. They even did that back in '94 when the trannies first came out.

It will vary slightly from truck to truck depending on the TPS/APPS reading, gear ratio, etc. , but you're pretty close on the range.

It's funny how some people are annoyed by lockup, even in the stock application because it lugs the motor down. Then you have another group of people that love being in lockup and want to force it all the time.

The lockup (OD off) at 26 mph is what finally bugged me enough to put an UNLOCK switch on my transmission.

These engines don't make much power from 1200-1500 RPM. I have no idea why anyone would want lockup at such a low RPM. But to each his own!

The y2k shop manual lists the shift sequence the same as the 1999 manual... don't know if the manual is right or if someone failed to update something (that wouldn't be a first). Personally, I like getting the lockup in 3rd w/ the OD on.

THANK YOU Chris!!!:D

Finally I know that I am not alone on this. I appreciate your response. I agree that lockup at 26mph is absurd! Could you tell me more about the unlock switch? :)
