I have owned an '05 since May of this year. Prior to this I had an '03 S. O. A comparison between the 2 is what sparks my concern. First, I noticed my '05 smokes quite a bit (black) more than the '03 under patial or full throttle. Even after a full throttle blast ( to clean it out) it still smokes just as much. Mileage around town is 16-17 & 20-21 on the freeway. Performance is excellent. Now that winter has arrived, this thing starts & idles poorly compared to the '03. Once the engine has a little temp in it, its OK. At first I attributed this to fuel, but have now ruled that out. Has anyone had similar experience with their truck? In advance, sorry for being a little long winded.

P. S. The '03 was stock at first & then added an Edge box with Banks exhaust.

The '05 is stock with 8,000 miles on it.

Mine does pretty much the same thing. I think the black smoke you are seeing is just the CAT cleaning the soot out of itself. Mine will always do it worse after a long run at steady speeds but will do it on hard acceleration also.

White smoke and a rough idle on cold start uo is normal. If you have an auto turn on the high idle and it should smooth right out. If you have a manual you can do a little work to enable the high idle. Works greta for cold weather warm ups. ;)

go to the dealer and have the fast idle software installed their was a tsb about being able to have it done it will idle up to 1500 rpm works gerat on those cold mornings

Is the fast idle TSB good for Manual Trans? TIA, Scott

Nope. The manual fast idle (using the cruise control buttons) only works for automatics.

Some 6-shooter guys are using a stick between the acellerator pedal and the driver's seat. Use the electric seat controls to adust the idle speed.

Not quite true. The fast idle parameters are in the PCM and can be activated on the manuals. DC has a kit for the 06's that should work on the older trucks that includes a clutch swith to disable the fast idle. The other option is to ground pin 21 on the b connector, PTO I believe, and be careful. With a little engineering it is possible. :)
