Does anyone know for sure what causes the popping we hear with these third gens? Mine does it stock, worse with the EZ, even worse with the VA 3. 2 along with a slight delay, and even worse with VA EZ stacked. I pops a few times then pulls like a freight train. I would not think it is just the rail being drained because all the EZ does is add pressure but I don't know. If it wasn't straight piped I wouldn't hear it, but I can and it bothers me. I have at a minimum 12 psi to the CP3. It is really starting to bug me.

Thanks

I think that is called "bursting". Caused by draining the rail.

I know my C3. 2 did it on lvl 2.

My PPE will do it big time on extreme stacked with the EZ and TST. Not sure why... :-laf

If the EZ is demanding pressure and the CP3 can't supply it you will have issues. If you have been running the pressures boxes you might want to check the rail pressure relief valve and make sure it is holding. Once the valve pops the rail won't hold the pressure demanded.

Ez is the only pressure box I have run. Right now I only have it set on one to stack with the VA 3. 2. I'm starting to think a rail pressure gauge would be very nice.

Just curious how you tell if the pressure relief valve has popped? I know where the valve is at but just wonder how you tell?

Mine pops also with TST stacked with Bullydog downloader. TST can be at 1/1 or 5/5 and bullydog on 90hp or tow setting.

If I run just the TST alone I have no popping

Sounds like the high pressure rail to me sucking down to me, the only real way of knowing is to put a gauge on it and watch what happens as you load up the truck.

Not sure if mine is doing the exact same thing as you describe or not. Mine started making a very fast popping noise yesterday when running the performance program. Never did it before with crazy larry. The sound is almost as fast as a machine gun or something. I am going to poke around a little more to see if I can find anything

Ditto!!! Same settings,... same result.

I have this same issue! Sounds like an AK47 on full auto, had thought it to be "timing knock" originally but now I really believe it has something to do with my CP3. I see that "BHaner" called it "bursting". If you look at some of my previous posts you will see I have inquired about this before, would really like to rectify. just my $0. 02

Popping,...is FASS the fix,...doubt it

I have the popping and I have the FASS 150. I don't think, if that guy had the same thing that it was fixed by the FASS by the dealer. I am however having my CP3 and hp valve checked out by a performance friendly dealer on Thursday. That should tell me something and hopefully eliminate possibilities.

this problem is from or a combo of-----the rail is dry, lean pop! or the relief valve is not letting enough fuel in the rail, lean pop again or your injectors are failing causeing a lean knock---which translates to a poping sound through the exhaust. i have expirenced all of them. thanks :D

Feedback on this popping from Mark Chapple @ TST

Mark said the following:

"The popping at the 3rd to od shift is most likely turbo surge. The tighter the transmission, the quicker it pulls engine rpm down at shift and excess air in the intercooler goes backward through the turbo making a pop. "

Re: the lighter sounding popcorn popper like sound when at wot at lower rpms Mark said this:

"I suspect the other popping you are hearing is the rail running out of fuel. "

In the new diesel power mag there is a history write up on the D/C engine from birth which makes reference to the VP44 injection pump

going bad because of the lift pump failure and recommends a fuel pressure gage to help detect lift pump failure.
