Just changed my Air Filter yesterday (normally have the dealer do it when I'm getting an oil change)..... this is the stock air box i'm talking about!

I noticed that there is a large gap (1/2 - 1") between the air box and where the air come in (fendor)..... and that there was a piece of foam that connects the two..... (it was halfway sucked into the airbox)... .

Does everyone's truck have a 1/2 to 1" gap between the airbox and the fendor /air input? or does my truck have the airbox mounted wrong??? Seems stupid that they would have it desinged to take air from outside the engine compartment and then leave a 1" gap to ingest engine air... .

Any thoughts? Thx

Havn't looked closely at mine but it won't make much diffrence if that makes you feel any better.

I agree the fit of the air-box to the fender is a little rough, but mine doesn't have that big gap, if any. Do you have the box seated down on it's little "snap-in" compression type mount (its on the bottom, toward the rear on the right) kind of a pain to line up. Check that, otherwise I don't know why you would have such a large gap.

I didnt attempt to pull it off and reinstall it..... the upper attatchment point was connected correctly and the bottom was attatched... . just not sure if it was done correctly... .

Per the other post, it prob doesnt really matter, it's just stupid! Why would you engineer a product to get air from the outside and leave a 1" gap???

Mine too. I wondered about this two years ago when I got the truck, and everyone seemed to agree that it is normal.

Personally, I replumbed mine to get air fromthe engine compartment rather than through the fender. Measureing temps at the horn it made no significant diffrence and I no longer get that pluged up dirty spot on my filter from the all the dusty air it sucks up off the top of the front tire. This may not apply to those whome live their lives on asphault.

My 2004.5 Quad Cab 4x4 5.9L has a gap of about 3/4". For the last couple of months I have been checking with friends and every truck from 2004 - 2012 has a GAP.
Have sent Chysler Group LLC and my local dodge dealer an email about this problem. EVERY Dodge (14 trucks and counting) that I have looked at has a GAP.
This problem is so far is 100% of every truck I look at has the GAP between the stock air filter box and the inside fender. The front box bracket (that attaches with a 10 mm nut)
has twisted and the grommet shelf (this is where the box nubs fit into the grommet) on the battery tray has bent down. Also, in most trucks the foam is missing.

I had foam between the two that finally feel out. I had one of those foam knee pads ya get from home depot for working in the garden. I cut it up to make a new gasket its about 1/2 "thick it work like a charm and its a little denser and thicker and it doesn't look like it will fall out so easy. And it's a crappy shade of purple you can look down and see if it's still there pretty easily.

My 07.5 had the gap due to the foam falling out. Nothing to worry about. I just had the headlights out of my 14 yesterday doing some rewiring of the lights and noticed that there is a 4 or 5" pipe coming from the air box and heading to the rear of the truck so that it isn't taking air from the front portion of the fender cavity but some where more rearward. I didn't take to the time to try and see where the pipe stopped but now after reading this post I'm curious.

My foam fell out too with some getting sucked into the air box. Cleaned it all out and removed all traces of the old foam "conduit". No problems ever. This is a non-issue for me.
