I could find out what DC recommends for valve adjustment intervals on the third gen engines, but I trust the TDR members recommendations more. What say you?

I think it's 125k miles for normal driving. If you have a hr to burn I would do it. They will probley be in spec.

They are adjusted my machine I have not done any that were set at prefered clearance... ... ... ... ... ... . and I have done MANY. With-in spec vs where it should be is a big diff.

150,000 miles schedule A, 135,000 miles schedule B according to DodgeRam. info. That's for 24V, but not sure if the exact numbers carried over to the last 5. 9s. I'm pretty sure the 150,000 is correct.

I have also been considering getting a valve adjustment done. I am constantly towing heavy trailers (10,000lbs-40,000lbs). What kind of differences will you see from doing a valve adjustment?

Hey Bob4x4,

How many of the new trucks have you seen with low mileage have valve noise? I have a concern and the dealer told me that they would not adjust the valves because it was an "adjustment". They would not adjust them until I had 15k miles or more. Have 7700 now. What ya think I should do?

Chris

I adjusted mine at 40K. I have never done anything like that before. I had a friend help out. It took about two hours and one special tool, a barring tool but you don't even need that. Someone here has detail instructions with pictures. The truck was much quieter after the adjustment. Oo.

The 06 trucks exhaust valve is clearenced at . 026 instead of the normal . 020 Not sure when that clearance started. Maybe bob4x4 can chime in.

Hey bob4x4 if you do read this what would happen if someone clearanced the exhaust valve on a 06 to . 020? Would the 06 run cooler? If so would it hurt the cat?

You also referenced the "With-in spec vs where it should be is a big diff. "
could you elaborate a little more? Thanks.

VALVE LASH LIMIT CHART INTAKE EXHAUST

0. 152 mm ( 0. 006 in. ) MIN. 0. 533 mm (0. 021 in. ) MIN.

0. 381 mm (0. 015 in. ) MAX. 0. 863 mm (0. 034 in. ) MAX.

NOTE: If measured valve lash falls within these specifications, no adjustment/reset is necessary. Engine operation within these ranges has no adverse affect on performance, emissions, fuel economy or level of engine noise.

This is a quote from an 06 factory publication, notice the huge acceptable range. I have had 2 07 5. 9's with under 15 miles on the clock have pushrods come out of the rocker they were so loose. I don't think I would call that an accurate setting.

Most all trucks will idle smoother, some will run out better some even see better mpg. I promise nothing but a smoother idle but some are out worse than others.

Honestly not many people I have seen do an accurate v/adj. I say do it right or leave it alone. If it were mine I would do it myself.

I have never seem D/C authorize a valve adjustment under warranty unless there was a verifiable concern.

. You may not even want one done under warranty for what the tech would be paid. Care and concern cost more than what D/C is willing to spend in most cases.

One more thing adjustments that are legit are only 12/12,maybe that is why they said come back at 15k:-laf

Thanks for the replies. I never trust DC to do careful adjustments. I have 24,000 K on my 06. I will be doing it soon, for my own peace of mind.

Bob, do you recommend shooting for the middle of the spec or tighter?

I have always set mine at the . 010 and . 020 on my earlier 12 valve trucks. This is my first 24 valve.

I have always used 8-18 in the others with great results. The 06 they must be trying to protect the exhaust seat and valve from temps.

Bob

Wouldn't a looser setting create more heat as the gases would stay in the cylinder longer?

I was told the reason for the looser . 026 setting on the 06 trucks was to build heat so the kitty would live longer.
