Anyone doen this deed?

My dealer says it's gona hurt! Stuff like new housing in the rear, new rear carrier, etc.

Is it worth the trouble?

I'm thinking that going to 285-75-16 tires might be a better compromise.

any opinions would be appreciated...

Go with the 285 tires.

I've got a 98 2500 4x4 with 5 spd, 3. 54, and 285 tires. I've thought several times that I wish I had the 4. 10 gears instead of my 3. 54's.

The 3. 54's and 285's are fine for freeway speeds, but if you're towing a trailer and have to drop below 60mph you have to shift down to keep the revs up.

When my 285's wear out I'm thinking of dropping to 265's to slow myself down a bit. The ISB loves to run over 2k rpm, so you know I'm speeding almost all the time.

Jim:
NO-mo-no-mo-no-mo.
Really, leave the rear as is and put in a US Gear OD. For towing you can't get any better. The cost may be a little more but the results out-weigh the cost many times over.
It was not ask for but my $. 02.
