A rough estimate is fine, how much to swap out 4:10's to 3:73's?Does anybody in the NW want to trade in May? Can this be done on an 01. 5? Paul

4:10- 3:73 swap wouldn't be worth the money. Just get a couple tire sizes different next time your tires wear out. If your doing it for gas mileage the 1 mpg would take a long time to pay for itself even at todays fuel prices.

Both the Dana 60 (front) and Dana 80 (rear) need a different carrier to change from 4. 10 to 3. 73 gears. I just priced out new parts to swap my Dana 80 gears to 3. 55s, and here are the best prices I found for new parts:

Limited slip carrier $650

net Dana 3. 55 ring and pinion $410

Master install kit $200

Instead I found some used 3. 55s with a posi on ebay for $200.

Shop will usually charge about $500 labor to setup gears. I did mine myself, but be warned this is not an easy bolt on, and if you have any doubt about doing it yourself, or you do not have much patience, do not attempt it.

Your front axle parts will be cheaper because they are much more popular in light trucks. Probably $400 total for a new carrier gears and bearings. The front axle will require about the same labor charge as the rear.

So if you use new parts, and have a shop perform the work, I would guess you will be in for about $2660.

Considerably less if you can do the work yourself, or find good used parts.

PM me if you have any questions about what is involved in doing it yourself.

Did it on a 2WD.........

It was pricey. Actaully I did it twice, Swapped for 3:54's and thought they were too tall so I bought the 3:73's. Difference is I got the right carrier during the swap. That way I only had to buy the gear set.

I would go with the others advice and see about tire sizes. With the utility bed on my truck I was unable to accomplish this.

One thing I will say though is that the 3:73 gears are perfect for these trucks. Dodge finally offered them on the 03's with the American axles. Though I have heard a rumor that they are going back to Dana. If this comes to pass I wonder if they'll still be offering the 3:73's

how come so much i was talking to a local 4x4 shop and they quoted about 1700. 00 and change dont remember ... . thats was gears and a lsd for the rear and labor on a 4x4?

I run a taller tire than stock. In the winter I tow most of the time and the 4:10's are just right to keep me at the right speed and RPM's. 235/85's in the winter, 255/85's in the summer but don't like the spongy feeling of the D rated tire and to go larger with some wide tall tire just to get gear ratio down would be a bothersome PIA to drive far for fun.

The 3:73 does seem like it would be the best setup for me, I wish DC would have offered it back when I bought new, oh well they gave me a "53" block instead, I still love this truck. Paul

I went from 3. 55s to 4. 10s last year with about 500 miles on my truck and paided $1050 out the door for everything.

Truck was done in less than one day.

Bill_L is correct about $1,000

I found a Canadian Shop At the "Always In April Portland Swap Meet" that quoted me $1100, for installed new gears to go to 3. 73 or 4. 10 from 3. 54 for a Dana 60 front and Dana 70 rear, Swap, one day in his shop. The Dana 70 carrier will handle up to 4. 10 in 3. 54 carrier assebly. This is new gear only installed.

Bill_L,

Where did you get yours done? I live near you. I need to go to 3. 54 gears. Do you still happen to have yours lying around?

Thanks,

Nathan
