Archived 4 BT runs itself out of fuel?

I am working on a Cummins 4 BT in a Land cruser FJ 60 (guy needs help, no money to pay a real mec!), ran great all the way from CO too the OR coast. Now it will run itself dry. I put a new lift pump (mecanical pump), F/O filter (good clean fuel), still only runs for a few min then starts smoking and running ruff, shortly after that runs itself out of fuel? Crack the injectors and bleed air and will run fine for a few min again then the same thing. Today I found a leaking vac line from the intake to the inj. pump diafram, replaced, same thing. Any help would be great!

Gotta be gettin air somewhere.

Try pressurizing the tank with a few psi of air, and look for leaks on the suction. elbow at top of tank could be suspect.

The line from the intake to the injection pump controls the aneroid - which assists in fuel delivery volumes under load.

Check to see if there is an inline filter pre lift pump. I have a lot of equipment at work that when it gets plugged, I get the same symptoms you are talking about.

In addition to tp0d, also try back blowing the fuel line in case the suction line at the tank snagged a floater.

I'm not sure I understand what it is doing, but, I had one that had the sock in the tank plugged with slimey good---bacteria--- and did something like that.



Take the fuel like off of the lift pump and pressurize the tank. I bet you don't get much.



If I'm right you need algeside. Truck stops, Napa etc.

If the vehicle originated in CO, as in that is where it lives, Algae is highly unlikely. If the guy has been running chicken fat (bio fuel) that could be a problem.

I re-read your post.



When it runs out of fuel, how are determing this? Fuel filters not full?



You state it starts smoking.



What color smoke?



If black, it is getting fuel, or a lack of air.



If gray or white, this is a timing or fuel starvation issue.



Algae is possible anywhere, and is more common with 40-50 degree temps, with a partially filled tank that has sat for some time.



Moisture in diesel assists algae.
