I am contemplating putting 4" exhaust on my stock CTD. I was wondering if I would notice any performance improvements ? Noticeable or just sound etc?( EGT's , towing, pulling etc)

What I am trying to do is get as much performance out of the stock engine, before I put a TST plate in later.

I have been looking at the exhaust ad's in the links section, but all say theirs is the best.

I would like to keep the truck as quite as it is now,if thats possible with the 4" exhaust.

Thanks for your help in advance. Ed

As far as a quite 4", Jardine seems to get the vote there. Although not as quiet as stock, it is definitely more quiet than some of the other 4" exhaust systems offered.

The more you are BOMBed the more benefit you will notice from a 4" exhaust. IMO - A stock truck, which you seem to have HP wise, will reveive very little noticable benefit from the 4", especially since your CAT already ran away.

If you don't plan on BOMBing the motor (fuel plate, injectors, ect... ) dump your stock muffler and put a high flow 3" on there. The 3" is good for up to around 300 hp.

If you do a search you will find a ton of info on 4" exhaust, and tons of opinions on the performance advanteges of 4" vs. 3".

You will see very little gain from a 4" system with your current modifications. I doubt that you will feel any "seat of the pants" difference. Maybe you would see a slight increase if running a before and after test on the dyno, but I don't feel that it would be worth the money. Some people argue that larger exhaust is not necessary on our diesels becausse we are not turning enough rpm's to make it worth while... but after 350 hp it sure can't hurt!!

Have you already gotten all the free hp that is available from your stock pump? There are several adjustments that can be made that will actually give you a noticeable increase in power.

4" exhaust

ed:

i made my own 4" exhaust for my 01 24 valve. if you want it as quiet as stock, one way to achieve that is with a long, open, or straight thru truck muffler. i assembled my own system, using a Goerlich's truck muffler, about 38" long. the volume of sound is about the same as oem, but deeper tone. itried several combinations before that worked for me. not sure it made any difference in performance, though.

I saw what seemed to be quicker spool-up with the turbo and seems to cool down a little quicker.

I like the look and sound, enough reason for me.

I would punch out the cat, and then go with a good 4" muffler and tailpipe. This is what I did to my truck, and I am happy. I got a Jardine 4" muffler, punched out cat, and a mandrel bent tailpipe from Walker. This cost me around $200. 00 total.

Even with a plate and injectors, the 4" may not seem like a big improvement until you pull. That is when your likely to see the greatest all around gains.

Set your muffler free.

One of the things I like best about my 4" system is the sound of a restriction-free exhaust. I would guess that a no cat, no muffler 3" system would sound good also.

I agree that with a stock truck, you are not going to reap much benefit from a 4" system. I did notice that I got faster spoolups on the turbo and, although I may be imagining this, better acceleration.

Contact <a href=http://www.jardineperformance.com/ target=_blank>Jerry Jardine</a> or <a href=http://www.stans-headers.com/ target=_blank>Stan Fuller</a> for some advice. Exhaust is their main business.
