i have so 03 2500 lb i hear a lot obout the four in ex i also understand the the ex on my truck is 4in down to the muff and then it is 3 in.

i use my truck to pull a 35 ft fiver, my question is will changing the pipe from the muff back make that much difference in egt or would i be better off putting on a better air filter system ?

any info any can give would be great thank in advance

The muffler may be some restriction, but the biggest by far is the little exhaust housing on the turbo. An AFE air intake will help some too. The turbo is the main system that you can change for better egt.

I don't see the point in making the exhaust system larger at just one point, when the turbo housing is the restriction.

You will see a benefit to simply changing the muffler to something that flows free. Beyond that you're just bombing for looks with that stock housing.

There are two measureable results of value POTENTIALLY obtainable from exhaust mods: lower egt's and hp.

My personal experience: Lower egt's by about 75 degrees. Meaningful if you are pulling seriously over gross. Otherwise, one downshift and 5mph less over a hill accomplishes the same result.

Regarding hp - there have been numerous realworld 3"/4" comparisons reported via TDR. The last I remember was reported by Joe D last fall: 380 dyno hp at 3" jumped all the way to 387hp with the 4" pipe. Not much ROI there.

My personal experience with 4" (EZ, 275's and DTT) was more noise, greater turbo lag off idle with modified TC - crusified my 0-60 times, and zero mileage gain.

Like the aftermarket airfilters, many guys seem to confuse noise with hp. TDR's dyno comparisons (not the vendors') show otherwise.

Before you invest your hard earned dollars, drop the muffler and do some stopwatch comparisons of stock exhaust vs open (4"). While you are at it, do the same with and without your air filter (lid off).
