Fuel In oil???

The Shame, Beat by a DMax

I am looking into a new exhasut system for improved MPG.

I have a quote for a Banks system with 2 gauges (Piler mounted, EGT and boost) and and the adjustable fueler mod. for $2005, installed.

I have seem just the exhaust for under $500 but if you open up the exhaust to you need to balance the system with the fueler chip (modular)? and them do you need the gauges?

TIA

Bob

With just a 4" exhaust no you do not "need" gauges or any extra fuel. I would try to find members in your area and try to listen to different exhausts, they all sound different. I didn't buy my 4" exhaust for performance, I bought it for the sound and sound alone, if it helps me in other areas then great.

There is JRE, Jardine, BullyDog, Banks, Diesel Dynamics, Stan's Headers, and the Diesel Pro or something like that I can't remmber, anyhow thats the "major" exhausts I can recall off top of my head. They range in price from $425 to $800 I believe.

I wouldn't "expect" to see any milage gains from just going to a 4" exhaust, you might like the sound so much you keep your foot in it more :D Least thats what happened in my case, every since teh installation of the exhaust, oh so long ago I drive around town with over drive off and run it to redline alot... ... ...

Gauges are always good to have, but as I said with just a 4" exhaust you don't "need" them. However if you add a fueling box then yes gauges would be recommended. You could prolly do a minor fueling box (of your choice) a 4" exhaust of your choice and gauges of your choice for $1200 or less. (Depending on which products you went with. Anytime I do a mod I do not "expect" a milage gain due to my driving style/habit, I am extremely happy if I can stay at the same milage, which is around 14mpg. Ask anyone whos followed me or rode with me, I don't baby it :D

I would look up Rob Hanson for the install, hes always willing to help and it won't cost ya much more then a 6 or 12 pack I imagine :)

Don't jump into this to quickly.....

Brobeson...

IMO you're flirting with disaster to not have gauges, especially since you're set up to tow. I don't tow and therefore am limiting my comments as below.

Main performance benefit of 4" is lower egts, which again, you should be monitoring with a gauge. All of the bombs on my truck haven't improved my mileage at all.

I'm staying out of the Banks discussion. Do a search, and you'll figure out why. ;)

IMO the choice on exhaust systems is completely objective. Especially if the engine is stock or slightly bombed. Personally I went the inexpensive route. I had a local shop build me a 4"system starting with a Stans Headers downpipe. Initially the system was a straight pipe, but I decided to go with the Dynomax 4" welded race muffler form Jegs... . cost about $70. The total system cost me $420 installed... the shop (Master Muffler and Brake in Hillsboro) welded it all together for me. It looks great and sounds Too Sweeeet.

I went with the Jardine exhaust.

I installed my EZ at nearly the same time so I don't know which improved my milage the most. I gained a solid 2 MPG and quite a bit of seat of the pants power.

The whole set up, EZ, 4" Exhaust and a triple pillar mount with Autometer Z-series Boost, Pyro & transmission temp (With block for line) cost me about $1200. I would recommend the gauges. They really help with the milage too. You know what the engine is doing exactly. I watch the boost and pyro and there seems to be a certain point where they cross over that I get maximum milage. Unfortunately I rarely stay there, I like to go fast!!

A word of warning though, Bombing is addictive!!!

Example: DD2's and transmission upgrades on order. :D :D :D :D

That should get me a little more milage too. ;)

Here is what you can expect from 4" exhaust system.

Better throttle response.

Quicker acceleration.

Higher average boost.

Better fuel economy.

Lower EGT.

Quicker turbo cool down.

Awsome sound.

Things to watch for, Quality of materials i. e. 16 gauge VS. 14 guage tubing. Muffler design, Cheaper mufflers will make a very anoying Droan in the cab at 2100 to 2300 rpm.

Non adjustable tail pipes.

If you want to hear our system visit our web site at www.jannettyracing.com check out the multimedia section there is lots of great stuff in there.

I dont sell exhaust systems nor am I affiliated with anyone that does.

IMO exhaust is a waist of your money IF: you are looking for a performance enhancement. there are other things that cost as much and less then some, that will get you a bigger performance gain.

IF... . you are looking for sound changes, then have at it. :D

I dont know if you have heard of Joseph Donnelly or not. if not, he has done extensive Dynomometer testing and can back up what he says with PROOF. attached is a quote from Joe that he left in another exhausting discussion earlier this week.

"At your power level, no difference between 3" and whatever bigger size you choose. At 380 rear wheel hp, you gain 7 hp with 4" and no muffler over 3" with a Walker 21468 muffler. Above 350 hp, the HX40 is valuable to lower egt, and it is designed for 4". Sickly has run 613 hp through 4" on #2 only. If you want bigger for appearance or sound, that is another thing" -JOE D. auth. -

the above would apply to your situation also. exhaust is worth about 25F off a stock trucks EGT's. a Psychotty air system or others alike (the one I am developing) can take off as much as 200F.

the first thing you should do is get some guages. next if you want more power (50-100HP over stock) but not alot more power (100+) then get a "box" EZ, VA, TST or ??, and be done with it.

again. if you want to change the sound of your truck then go for it.

if you want/need more power do other things FIRST.

as stated before, explore ALL avenues before loping down your hard earned money, anywhere. :D

I Don't care to get into a debate based on hearsay!

But if you know so much about modifiing engines, Explain how a completely stock 98. Dodge can pick up 3 mph top speed on a 10% grade just by changing the exhaust to a JRE 4" system.

EGT dropped a solid 75 degrees

Turbo spool up time dropped by 0. 7 seconds.

Boost increased by 2. 5 psi.

Acceleration 0 to 60 mph on 10% grade, dropped by 2 seconds.

Fuel mileage increased 1. 5 mpg.

Certainly can't do that without more HP and Torque.

Anyone who Adds fueling without adding air flow is a FOOL!!!

These engines are far to expensive to repair or replace.

See Proper Order for Upgrading your 12 valve, in the archives.

The last two things I did to my truck were Stan,s 4" exhaust. Dropped my exhaust temps 75* to 100* and turbo spools up a little quicker. Last mod was the BHAF now I can not get my truck over 1100* egt. With no real turbo lag 32lbs. boost.

Jardine, Jardine,Jardine.......

I have the deep tone w/o the drone. Easy do it yourself at home in about 2 hrs. The ss tip will need to be welded. Sam.

JRE 4"

I will agree with Ted when I put my 4" on I noticed a 100 drop in EGT. Before the 4" I installed a psychotty and noticed no drop at all in EGT. I guess what I'm saying when you add more power etc you need to also let the engine breath. Therefore I am all for bigger exhaust. I would go with the JRE, sounds good excellent quality and service. easy installation. Good luck on your decision, oh by the way go with some gauges also. Dwayne  :D :)

exhaust

i pieced mine together at home with a reasonable shop. 4" downpipe and tailpipe from doug at adt, 4"straight thru truck muffler from Goerlich's and 52 in of 4" pipe. finished off with a Meg's stainless steel tip from Genos. sound is GREAT!! dropped my mileage 1mpg at least. WOT all the time does that:D :D sound is not much louder than stock, but deeper. sure can hear the turbo out the pipe!!!!NO DRONE!!!KOOL!!! can be put together for around $250-$300. :)
