Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) 4 WD light on?

Any one had the 4 WD light in the dash come on from time to time when it is still in 2WD? Last night it went into 4WD with the shifter still in 2WD high or at least the front axle locked up the hubs. I need some ideas before I go out and lay on the ice.

There is a little 2 wire connector on the back of the passenger side frame rail. It is for the 4x4 light. The wires come out of the axle disconnect assembly. If water or moisture gets into it the light may flicker or come on. My connector got hit by some debris and cracked.
