My 1991 4x4 4 wheel drive indicator lamp on the dash works intermittently. I'm thinkin' it's the switch that is either mounted internally in the transfer case or possibly mounted externally on the transfer case. The light will come on when in low range but only intermittently when in high range. Anybody know where I might locate this switch at? My flashlight did a 5' dive off the top of the cabinet in the garage last night and 3 nights ago, I backed out of the garage with my drop light still hooked up to my front axle so I ripped that thing out of the wall and the bulb didn't handle it too well. So needless to say, I haven't been able to poke around in the darker confines underneath the old Dodge. So what I need is 1 flashlight, a droplight bulb and directions to this damn switch. HELP...

Pat, the 4x4 indicator switch on a np 205 transfercase is located on top towards the passenger side. The pn is 04210979. I've replaced mine once also.

Pat: Get your drop light fixed, grab some WD40, and crawl under the truck. Clean the grease and road dirt from around the switch (it's exactly where Gene said it is) put the levers in hi and low, check the dash lights, move the switch from under the truck by hand while someone looks for flutter on the dash, spray the WD40 on the switch and linkage to loosen if it's sticking. Re-lube the linkage only with grease when done. Check the wire plug in connector for dirt and corrosion also. Good luck.

first gen: Blast the linkage, the rod end connection, the compression spring, and the shift gate with WD40 to loosen and remove road grime, and old grease/dirt. Wipe it all, and re-grease the rod end, spring, and shift gate. While you are under your truck sitting upright (I can) scoot over and nozzle some WD into your parking brake cables.
