After this last snow storm here in the east I finally got to use the 4 wheel drive, worked like a charm. Could not believe the extra traction when powering the front axle.

I did however find it very difficult to get into 4 wheel low, I was afraid to force it, so I stopped and moved a bit to try again sometimes it slipped right in other times it just would not go:confused:

Any idea on what I'm doing wrong?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. Mine's the same way going into 4Lo; just let it find the groove and it'll slip right in - dont try it moving. 4hi is easy.

4 LO

My 04' is easy to get into 4 LO -- I just reach over and flip the switch :D

Now my 01' is a different story..... I had a tough time finding the gear for the first few times. After awhile it seemed to find its groove and was pretty easy. However, during the interum I found that if I put the primary transmission in neutral then getting the 4Lo to engage was much easier.

With my 48RE I put the transmission in neutral while at a complete stop... slips right in (and out) of 4 wheel Low.

4 low should slip in quite nicely when slowly rolling [forwards or backwards]. if you are at a dead stand still, it will be a lot harder [them t-case gears are not syncronized... ]

Keeping a slow roll makes sense, sort of like shifting a non-syncro transmission...

Will try that next snow storm or trip to the beach. .

The key is to be moving, but just barely. I've owned 2 now with the manual transfer case, and really like them after learning the secret. Too fast and it is really ugly! Too slow and it won't go in. Remember the same thing for shifting back out into 2WD or 4HI. Moving but just barely is the key. :)

Would you send some of that "SNOW" westward so others can try our four-wheel drives also? The only time I'm able to slip into 4-HI is going out to my brothers place where he's building a house on 6 acres. Unfortunately, I spend more time cleaning the mud off the truck than actually driving in it.

So please, those of you that are on the East coast, send some "SNOW" to those less fortuate than you. :D :D

My dad says "SNOW" is a filthy four letter word and can't be said in his house. What word do you think I'm teaching my Nieces and Nephew to say around Grandpa this season?

you guys ever look into what a tank this transfer case is? Its spec'd for vehicles up to 17,500 GVW!

see http://www.newventuregear.com/tcases.html

Also, as a reality check am I right that the drivetrain is in this order?

engine-->transmission-->transfer case

If so, then the maximum torque that the transfer case would see is engine flywheel torque multiplied by the 1st gear ratio. Thats 3,125 ft lbs. Well the NV271/273 is rated for 7,890!

BTW, my manual (NV271) 'case goes in and out of 4H/2H at 55 mph just like the manual says. It works perfectly smooth and very nice!

CKruse is right about the 4H/4L shift. barely moving is the key!

Hey, if I watch the weather channel long enough so that the perfct conditions exist for a few days, I will load my 8' bed up with the snow from my driveway and personally deliver to your Dad's house so that your nephews and nieces can see the four letter word for real right at grandpa's. Just let me know when you are ready for the "SNOW-JOB".

Thanks for the offer. It's looking like we should be getting snow on Wednesday instead of the rain they said over the weekend. If we're going to have the same type of winter weather like the past two season's don't be surprised if you don't get a call from me for a load of snow.
