Volkswagen diesel reliability

I was talking with a co-worker at another sattelite store of ours who, on the 1999 Powerstroke has never changed the oil/fuel filter/or air filter!!!!!I opened the air box up, and low and behold there was an inch of mud above the fins of the fram filter and leaves and tons of large bugs at the bottom of the air box!!the truck just turned 40,000 miles and has excessive blowby around the intercooler boots, but otherwise he says it runs fine... i couldn't believe it if i hadn't a seen it... this is a company truck BTW with a 17' flatbed and stakerails on it that hauls 3,000-12,000 pounds regularly.

Makes me sick to think about it... I don't care if it is a Phord, it's still an expensive diesel option that deserves a "little" care. Poor diesel! :(

He will gum up all that HEUI injection crap and before to long it will run horrible and idle rough. I used to have a company truck that was abused as far as oil changes go before I got a hold of it. At 2500 miles it would set a check engine light, the only way to claer it was to have the oil changed. I idled real bad also. IMHO when you hear a PSD idling real crappy they need an oil change.

It's a diesel, it can handle it. Only the weak old cummins diesels require maintenance. This is what I hear from a lot of ford and gm guys. :D

Oh yeah, remember to let it idle for as long as possiable too, that helps them run better, and it can handle it cause it's a diesel... .

My father in law----a heck of a good guy and long since departed-----did not believe in maintanence ... ... ... .

If the oil was low he would add--what ever oil was handy, and if it got hot and he thought to check the radiator he would add water if it was low----that was the extent of what he did to a vehicle other than put fuel in it!!!!!

The only thing that saved him at all was that his vehicles were driven very few miles as he allways walked to work and traveled very little other wise; he would keep a car for several years.

Allways pitied the poor person who ended up with one of his trade ins. It was not disregard for others, he just had -zero- interest in vehicles other than necessary transport.

Knew a guy like Vaughn's father-in-law, great guy, just no interest in vehicles except their utilitarian usefullness - heck he never even washed his car - just traded them in every four years or so.

I at one time or another worked in a service station where we also performed lube & oil etc. I put this one car on the hoist, put the oil drain under the pan and pulled the oil plug. NOTHING! I had to take a screwdriver and jam it up the hole to break the crud loose so the tar could flow out.
