Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) BD II Dyno number Questions?

planning on buying a turbo hopefully in the next 6 months, would like as much input as possible before spending ... want to do it right once ... will have edge comp (in a month or two) ... what ever edms are recommended by manufactorer and a ksb1 or piers hx40 ... no towing only daily driving and drag racin' ... thanks for the help, Rex

I use the PDRhx40, it has been a great turbo for me.

Runs well, and proves itself on the dyno.

But, I hear Piers is now selling the B line of turbos(along with his own).

I would suggest giving him a call and asking.

They have a dyno in house and might be able to shed some light on your situation.

Piers does carry both now and pricing is out, also for a tad more money has a B-1 that works without changing the exhaust again..... talk to the Man or Mark, Harry or Bob.

Jim

I have a KSB1B and getting the flange & downpipe at the turbo end was no day at the beach.

I don't know about the 40, but the KSB1B was 1" longer longitudionally from centerline longitudionally of the exhaust manifold to the end of the turbo which made getting the mate to the downpipe a challange.

I finally got it right, but took several tries ($$$) of the flange and downpipe welding to get it right. There might be a better mate system now.

My KSB1B I got for towing. Low end spool is a little slow, but I got it for towing and I am sure they can be setup for just about any application.

There is a thread that has pics of the 40 and B1 shafts and wheels side by side. The B1 is much beefier, but also therefore heavier ... ... .

For what I want it to do it works VERY WELL for me!

want to do it right once ...

That's me exactly and that's why I went with the B1. It costs more, but much less than 2 HX-40's (if you happen to blow one or more). Do the search and compare the pictures of both, they are quite different in their sturdiness. Also the B1 cools very quickly and flows more air.

Not associated with any vendor's just very satisfied. But it all comes down to what you want and what you can afford. Pier's HX-40's have always had a good rep, but it's still made from an hx-40. As was stated he is also selling the B1 so their is only the conflict between the turbo's themselves, not necessarily the distributor.

thanks guys ... didn't want to trouble piers untill i had a little money in the bank ... i've seen the posts that show shafts and bearings and side by side thats why i am interested in the ksb1... so far it looks like thats what i'll be getting ... what is the approx price?

Here is a question for you guys, what is the biggest I could go without having to O-Ring my head, or worrying about a head gasket (iow)??? Couldn't I just wastegate it to under 50 PSI??

Yes... ... I ran at 55-60 psi with a 100K motor on a stock gasket for 6 months before I kicked it out but it was cylinder pressure that did it not boost!

Jim

I have the KSB-1 on my truck and I lost my headgasket at 50 PSI boost. Need to get the head o-ringed. I also do have and ETH if that makes any difference.

so vendors can list the price of EVERY turbo on their sites except the B-1?

If you will call Piers he will give you the prices and the run down on all of them, that part of the web page is being modified with the new prices. I don't think it's right for me to quote prices, now if you are buying from me that is a different story!

Jim

thanks for the answers Jim, i am just in the planning stages right now and didn't want to trouble a vendor untill i was able to pay him for his time ... my post sounded more sarcarstic than i intended, i had just looked at some websites and did a search on here and was suprised to find absolutely no suggestion of a price anywhere ... i'm spoiled by how available info is on the net and when i get stumped i end up sounding grumpy, your replys on this thread are appreciated :D
