Been reading that due to increased electrical demands in today's vehicles that some auto manufacturer's 2004 models will be switching over to 36 volt batteries with 42 volt alternators. It is expected that by 2010 all new vehicles will be equipped with the higher power systems. Alternator and starter will become one with braking energy routed though the combo unit to charge the battery during stops. All belts will be eliminated, components that aren't gear driven from the engine will be powered by electric motors. Electronically controlled valves will eliminate timing chains, cams and the associated components.
Don't go out and buy an expensive new battery charger quite yet. Read about it here
