4500 would not go in to any gear

On 03 [Calif. truck] with 4500 tan. stopped at rest area left truck running, when we went to leave the tran. would not go in to any gear. Shifter would go side to side but not in to any gear.
turned truck off and it would go in to any gear you wanted. Left it in gear and restarted it. It made a big clunk as we stared out after that it shifted just fine .Anyone got an idea what going on? I though I read some where that it could be some thing with the pilot bearing.

The clutch wasn't disengaging. I would start with making sure the master/slave cylinder is still working. After that the only thing that's left is the clutch itself. It will have to come out for inspection.

I just had that happen to me New Years night....... Had to do the same thing. Too cold to look at anything till spring.

Is it a 4x4? Thinking maybe transfer case.
