I'm looking at getting an Extreme Towing Transmission from "Phoenix Remanufactured Trasmissions" in AZ. Anyone have any experience with them? The mods they have listed (on their site-phoenizremanufacturedtransmissions-and their ebay ad, seem impressive - 5 pinion planets, kevlar bands, extra element clutch drums, Red Eagle clutches, billet double clutch TC, towing VB, etc. , and they are priced very reasonably. In speaking to a rep, he indicated that Dodge has upgraded the 47RE substantially since '99, and it sounded to me like the upgraded 47RE is more like the 48RE now.

What is the difference between the 47RE and the 48RE? Can the 48RE be installed in a '99 truck without wiring/plug changes? Is the 48RE preferable over the 47RE? Thanks!

I just brought this back to the top. I noticed in your sig "tranns on the way". If you did order one of these trannys, let us know how it works out.

First, all 96 and newer 47re's have 5 pinion front steel planets.

Red friction bands have better shift quality than Kevlar.

The 48re has a different shift lever than a 47re.

A 47 uses a 3. 8 to 1 shift lever for second gear, a 48 uses a 5 to 1 shift

lever and a . 020 thicker band strut.

valve body is different, including transfer plate, seperator plates, and pressure

and reverse boost valves.

geartrain is different (too many differences to list here)

pump creates 15-20 percent more VOLUME, not pressure and has o-ring

for drainback because trans still does not flow in park from factory

o/d planet is different

o/d clutches have different number in 03/04, back to 47 style in 05

neutral safety switch is different from 99 style and so is case in that area

rear clutch frictions have 92 teeth count instead of 47 style 41 tooth count

front and rear clutch retainers are differentto allow more frictions in front

clutch

These are the some of the most important changes and remember they

have not changed the torque converter part number.

Hope this helps with your question and decision.
