Mine and all 47/48RE I have seen have a pair of lugs on the OD housing and a corresponding pair on the rear of the main case that sure look like it was designed for some sort of brace/strut, but I have often wondered, but never saw anything that would indicate they were ever used on Dodge/Cummins trucks.

Well, the other day, I came across a photo on the web that seems to confirm my hunch about this mystery. This is a 48RE said to be from a 2006 SRT-10 with the Viper engine. These look like what I envisioned the lugs were for, and wonder if they are a factory part - they appear to be well designed and packaged? I scoured all the OEM Chrysler parts manuals, and cannot find a P/N for them. Does anyone know anything about these or seen them before? They seem like a good idea, even though probably not required for most applications. But I would like to get a pair just because it looks like what was intended and the extra support can't hurt...

It was driving me nuts, so I went back and re-checked the 2006 catalog closer, and found them! They were an SRT-10 item only, not w/ Cummins. They still show up for sale from Chrysler, and pretty reasonable price too. Going to try a set and see what happens.
