This might be an obvious one but bare with me I'm a little slow some times :) Would an 06 48 bolt in place of an 02 47re w/o any mods?

The bolts might fit, but the transmission control is totally different. The 47 still shifts like the old trannys in the first 3 gears, its all based on governor pressure, then OD is an electronic lockup. The 48 is a completely electronic beast controlled by the transmission controller and the engine controller talking with each other.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it can be done....

Not the way I heard it. The 24Valve is shifted by the PCM, with the Kick-down and line pressure being controlled by the TV Cable. The 48 Still uses the TV cable, 05 and later being controled by a stepper motor off of the ECU. To install the 48 in a 2nd gen, you need to swap the harness out of the Valve Body. also swap out the pressure transducers. Shearch R48s in the 24Valve 2nd Gen page, https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/search.php?searchid=1871373

Moose you are right, I have a 48RE valve body in my 47RE. I got it from Suncoast and it was a direct replacement and works great. I did have to place a resistor in one of the PCM leads to reduce voltage, it threw a code but that is common from what I gather.
