Truck 98. 5 4x4 with re47. All was well till this a. m. Fired truck and after a while took off, when the auto hit 2nd it slipped a little. Went back and checked the fluid, it was about a quart low.

I added a quart and all seemed well. Let it set for an hour and the first couple times it hit 2nd it felt and sounded like it slipped again.

I am going after a filter and transmission fluid, My question does the front (kickdown) band control 2nd gear? The rest seems fine, 1st takes off fine, and when warm 2nd seems ok but will feel kinda weak, 3rd is good and lockup is positive.

I don't really want to do a transmission at this time, I don't know if it could be a band problem or maybe a valve sticking? I am just hoping to avoid a major expense right now... ... Any Ideas?

Dirk

Yes, the front band is the holding mechanism that gives you second gear. Has it ever been adjusted? Most techs feel it isn't necessary to adjust with a regular service, I feel it is for this very reason.

Usually when your transmission needs to be rebuilt third is the first to go.

Yes i adjusted the bands about 20k ago, when i replaced all the fluid in the transmission. I have had no issues since. I need to see what happened to the missing quart of fluid, i don't see any drips but the drive is stone. I will start to park on cardboard for awhile.
I will change the filter and 4 quarts and adjust the bands to see if it helps... Thanks for the response.

Found the problem, one of the lines going to the cooler, was rubbing the frame and got a small hole wore in it. I have the line out now trying to figure out if i can braze on stainless steel or if a compression fitting would be better.
I was surprised how little oil was sprayed on the under side of the truck, very little for loosing that much fluid.
Thanks for the help.

don' t go with a flush do it rite change the filter and gasket

why flush a transmission and have a dirty filter my brother inlaw has a transmission shop the only way he will do a flush is if he drops the pan and a new filter and gasket are put in

if they just want a flush he tells them take it to some other shop we don't do half *** work

so take the time do it rite
