Hi

My 98. 5 2500 has a 47 RE in it and it is slipping in first but in an odd way. It only slips, more of a shudder, when first starting to move and only in a left turn. When it is moving it locks up fine straight ahead and right turns are ok. On occasion I have been pulling a travel trailer and needed to turn around on the highway using a center crossover, the trans would flare in a hard left turn and need to idle for a few seconds to get back in gear. I know that it will not last long like this so what should I do??? It has a shift kit and is full of oil and I checked the dipstick against another one. It seems to be starving for oil. I did not remove the check valve like the instructions wanted has this got anything to do with this problem?? Are there problems with the filters?/ I have seen recommendations that a filter from a 747 should be used. Are the bolts that hold the filter different lengths and if so could I have put them in the wrong place???

Thanks for your advice

Robert

When mine started doing about the same thing, it was low on transmission fluid. I missed the part about putting the truck in neutral, in park it shows almost full.
I had a leak in the pressure line to the cooler, it rubbed a small pin hole in the steel line on the x frame, and only leaked when driving, not a drop in park.

I check it on level ground in neutral (with two sticks) and I have fixed all the holes in the steel lines. It is acting like it is low on fluid but it is only on left turns and worse if they are down hill/ Wrong filter??

Thanks

Robert

Did it do it before you serviced the transmission? Did you adjust the bands when you serviced?
If it did not do it before the service i would pull it down and look at the filter, maybe it is the wrong one, or not seated properly.
I just went to auto zone or napa, bought a filter and changed it, along with several quarts of new oil.
I also added a drain plug to the pan, to make it easier to access.
Maybe someone else will chime in with other suggestions.

Thanks for your comments. I put the shift kit in almost two years ago and this problem has come up in the last six mounts. The first time was in Florida turning on a four lane divided road, left and a bit down hill and it flared like it had no oil and took a bit to recover. Several mounts later I was making a slow left turn in a parking lot and get a slight shudder that seems to come and go. I don't think that it will do it cold, shifts fine. I did adjust the bands when I did the shift kit. It seems to me that it is a low oil issue (???) but it is full hot and in neutral. I think that it is time to drop the pan and adjust the bands again and look at the filter (change).

Thanks

Robert

You are about 1/2 quart low on fluid. Check the level with the back of the dipstick.

A trans does not care which direction you are turning, but the pickup in the trans does. Add fluid, fix problem.

Thanks Dave

I will give it a try. I think that when the weather warms a bit I am going to change filter and go with one from a 727 that is open across the bottom and adjust the bands again.

What happens when the trans is over full??? I am sure that it would stop starving for oil.
