I saw the local dealer last night and he said they have a customer that is not happy with his 03. He has a 2500 QC SO/47RE 4:10's and when towing ~8800lbs, it has no ass on the highway. So, the dealer took it for a spin and said in town it feels like it should but once up to speed on the highway, it loses ground and his foot has to stay buried to keep it up to highway speeds. He really wants to help this guy out. They have diagnosed everthing from the transmission to the engine and everything is fine.

This guy traded in a 2000 47RE 4:10's and is very disappointed. The dealer can't recommend aftermarket, and has offered to trade him out with a HO/48RE for cost. He said no, fix this one.

So, is there something anyone has experienced? Could it be the difference in the axles? How about the turbo? He asked if I could post this for the experts can you help?

i cant help somone who is stupid. not trade 47/SO for a 48/HO for cost? i guess we will just have one more ford or chevy guy out there.

It figures,we have a good dealer will to make good with his customer, and a customer to thick headed to take advantage of it. I drove an 03 SO/47RE,it was a slug,it barely held 60 mph flatfooted on a slight incline,I wouldnt tow more than a small boat with a stock one. I think my stock 2000 would have destroyed this thing. Unless I had a lot of accessorys on the SO/47RE,Id take the HO/48RE offer and run, never look back.

Thick headed sounds about right. The customer's argument is "my 2000 had more power, why?" and the dealer is at a loss for explanations.

I dunno what the problem is, I have a SO/47RE and my truck certainly isn't a slug. And I have 3. 73's and 35" tires. My only gripe is it shifts into OD too early.

I know an '03 S. O. 47RE truck that dyno'd at 190RWHP, while a stock Ford 6. 0 Dyno'd on the same Dyno at 290.

I couldn't tell you why it's a slug. Have they tested the turbo? Sounds like he's getting enough boost for in town, but not enough for the highway (Or maybe a MAP/Boost sensor)

Hope this helps.

190hp=slug 290hp furd wow! i am going to dyno mine in may stock. i will say this i am tired of losing races. only thing i beat was a 99 stock 2wd CTD. loss chipped 7. 3 ford, old nissan truck the guy in the nissan was laughing at me. not to get off the subject these trucks are slow in stock form. mine will not be stock for long.

Don't know what the problem could be. I tow our 10,400 lb high profile 5th wheel with ours and I can't even tell it's back there. When I take off from a stop I have to be careful so I don't throw everything to the rear of the trailer.

Now if we want to get real and quit exaggerating, maybe we can make some sense of it. I have no power problem with mine and I tow way more than a small boat. I can maintain 70mph towing up a 3. 5% grade in O/D. That's full throttle. Towing 70mph flat takes no more than 1/2 throttle. Rolling hills and headwinds will occasionally call for full throttle but I don't consider that a problem. I'm moving a lot of wind back there.

Thanks Steve,

the biggest problem is the lack of support DC is giving the dealer. So he has another customer that tows ~13K with this set up (identical to Steve M's but 4x4) that is willing to bring by his truck and they are going to hook up the other guys trailer and load to let him drive it. The dealer's hope is that they will figure out that the truck is indeed low on power and DC finally listens to him. The dealer really thinks it's just an engine low on power.

my truck hauls a$$!!!

last week, i had the plow and salter on, and the bed was full of salt, about 6400 lbs worth, i believe i tipped the scales at the quarry just under 15,600 lbs total!. I had no problem motoring at 65-70 mph, up a hill, i still had power left. All u drive is a stinking SO with a 47re.....

I love my truck, and i'm not afraid to tell my wife.

go BIG or go HOME!

Are you saying that the dealer is willing to take this truck back and credit him what he paid for the SO/47RE and sell him the HO/48RE for cost? The guy said no? and your trying to help this guy out? Let me pass on some good advise. Stay far away from stupid people no good will come from this relationship

Sorry I think I miss read your post. It's the Dealer that wanted the help. Man what a great Dealer!!! What is this Dealers name so others will know to do business there.

Does it have good power with the OD off? I believe I read somewhere that with the 47RE, the engine de-rates the power in OD to save the trans. Could be wrong, but you might have him try it. But best bet is to trade for the HO and be done with it.

I think they quit doing that in '01. There was a TSB out to re program and give it it's rated power in O/D.

If it has low power at highway speed, I'm assuming we're at 2,000rpm or above, I'd look into intake and exhaust. If the exhaust sounds clear and throaty it's probably ok. The intake could be restricted. Does the '03 have a snorkel like the 2nd gens have. My '95 had a snorkel that would colapse and choke off the air coming into the filter box. A leak in an intercooler hose could be a culprit but that would likely be heard. How does the '03 read boost pressure? The P7100 has an AFC unit. Is there a sensor on the '03 to tell the ECM? Old fuel, clogged fuel filter from a bad tank of fuel, or a fuel pressure bypass regulator out of adjustment? Does the peddle open the throttle all the way? Just a few thoughts of what I might try to fiddle with. But it it were me, I'd trade for the HO/48RE if I weren't happy with my SO/47RE.

TPS out of spec ?. . getting full pedal ?

Gaddis Chrysler in Muncie, Indiana. They are great. They have supported Thunder in Muncie in the past and have supplied me with most of my parts.

Good questions guys, I will forward him this thread so he can check what has been suggested.
