What is the best-easyest way to drain as much auto transmission fluid from the 96-47RE with out damaging the transmission,I want to do a fluid change minis the t. c. I saw it posted once before but could not find it with a search. Thanks in advance.

transmission fluid drain

The most effective way I've found is this.

1. Drain pan

2. Remove pan

3. Remove filter

4. Loosen 10 - 7/16 valvebody bolts

5. Wiggle valvebody until it drops a little (You might need to remove the shift linkage, TV cable arm and electrical connector to allow it to drop. )

6. Let sit for an hour or two.

That thing NEVER quits draining. The longer it sits, the more fluid it holds. I have my check valve removed, so that may aid the draining process.

Bill,

If you loosen the VB make sure that when it's tightened it's in the proper sequence and torque. Doing this wrong can warp it.

Thanks for your replys Cris & Joe,my only question is due you realy have to remove the valve body? At one time I read something about finding the supply line going to the transmission cooler

disconnect it and let the transmission pump the fluid out was this fact or fiction? I can change out a transmission but I never changed transmission fluid and being retired I'm trying to save where I can. Thanks again. B. T.

fluid change

To use the cooler line method, you first service the pan, then hook up a hose to the return cooler line(the one that connects to the rear of case) secure to the pan or container (will have pressure in hose) put 5 or 6 qts of ATF+3 in trans, have helper(makes this a bit easier) start truck in neutral with park brake applied, add fluid while truck is running(4 or 5 qts) this will allow fluid to be pumped into converter forcing old fluid out. Shut off truck, reconnect cooler line, start truck and bring fluid level to full mark. This is the short version, I hope you get the idea. Dropping the pan and loosening the valvebody will at best only allow 1/2 the fluid to drain out of the converter. The DTT converter comes with a drain plug which makes this a much easier process. Hope this helps.
